problem: can't find SATA HDD in either BIOS or Windows

description: my computer used to work fine - i had Windows XP on a 200GB Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 (i think is the model) SATA HDD -- despite the fact that my BIOS could not find the HDD, i could still access it in Windows.

Then, one horrible day...

"Windows could not be started because the following file is either missing or corrupt: System32\Netfs.something"
(the filename is not an exact quote; sorry)

So i bought a 20GB (smallest i could find) Seagate ATA HDD and installed Windows XP on that; hoping to be able to still access my 192 GB of music/videos/games etc. on my SATA HDD.

Windows works on this Seagate (it's horribly slow, it's a 5400 RPM :(), but i can't find any of my SATA partitions (i had previously split my 200GB disk up into several partitions

i've run Windows Update, but that doesn't seem to help--what oh what should i do?!

I’ve seen that error MSG before. As a rule it’s a disk read error or a RAM issue and usually can be fixed going to safe mode and using last known good configuration.

Useless since you now can’t see the partition.

Have you enabled all SATA controllers?
Have you enabled RAID in the bios (The drive needs to be added as a single RAID device once on most boards)?
Have you checked your boot configuration in bios and boot up screen?

All silly stuff, I know. However, I’ve done it too ;)
 
Overclocking while using certain SATA ports can corrupt data on those ports on the MSI K8N Neo2 (may be on other NF3 boards too). What motherboard do you have? Are you overclocking?
 
well , now it works, supposedly...

no i wasn't OCing

i have a Chaitnech ZNF3-150 (pretty sure that's the right m odle name)

i got a 20GB ATA drive, loaded XP on it; downloaded the Sil1334 RAID drivers (the ones i need for my SATA HDD), and saw all the partitiosn correctly :D

but then, i restarted it, and it was like "Windows wasn't shutdown correctly pick a thing to do: Safe mode / w/ command promp / w/ network / Last good configuration / Normal"

so i chose normal

and my SATA version of Windows loaded :confused:

i can still see my ATA HDD too, so i guess everything is okay..?

Looks like you lucked-out. What's your plan for doing backups?

eventually i'll burn everything to DVDs

there's like..nearly 200GB of it..well..more like nearly 150GB... that's a bunch of DVDs... :(

any other suggestions?


EDIT: i really think this is a Windows problem, not a HDD problem; at least, i hope so :(
