SATA w/ IDE Problems

Well I can't seem to figure it out...

I have a Western Digital Raptor 10,000RPM 74GB SATA and a WD 200GB IDE.

At the moment Windows XP is installed on both HDD's (until I can fix the problem).

I can only seem to boot from the SATA drive if I unplug the IDE hdd.

Or I can boot from the IDE hdd and use the SATA as additional storage.

But I want to boot from the SATA and use the IDE drive as additional storage. And I can't seem to figure it out.

I've already gone into BIOS and put the HDD's into order

1.WD-74GB-SATA
2.WD-200GB-IDE


Any Ideas?
 
Most likely cause of this problem is that Windows installed its boot loader on your 200GB PATA drive. Sometimes, Windows will do that. Even if you use F6 with your SATA Driver, if it finds a PATA drive with an active partition, it will use that for the boot loader.

Potential 'home run' quick fix: On the first/only partition on your 200GB drive, there are some hidden files that Windows uses to start. First, you need to force the OS to show these files by clicking 'Tools' 'Folder Options' 'View' tab and check the option for 'show hidden files and folders' and clear the checkbox next to 'hide protected operating system files' and then click 'ok.' You should see 'boot.ini' 'ntldr' and 'ntdetect.com' in C:\ which are the files used to start Windows. If you don't see 'ntdetect.com' you're screwed - your system won't boot from the RAID controller. Skip to my resinstall instructions. Copy those three files to the Raptor's boot partition, shut down the comp, disconnect the 200GB, and start the box again. If you're lucky, the Raptor install will boot. You may also get a STOP Error for Missing_Or_Inaccessible_Boot_Device. If that happens, skip to my resinstall directions. If the system does boot with only the Raptor connected and assuming that the Raptor is before the 200GB in the boot sequence, then you can shut down, reconnect the 200GB, and be good to go. Problem solved. If copying the startup files fails with the stop error, you will have to make the 200GB (temporarily) first in the boot sequence, so that you can boot off the 200GB again, and backup the Raptor to it. With the Raptor's data safely on the 200GB, proceed to my reinstall directions.

Reinstall directions (BACKUP data on the Raptor before proceeding):
Disconnect all hard drives from the system except the Raptor (including any memory card reader that your BIOS may allow to be bootable), start your box, boot from CD, and use your F6 drivers disk, if needed. Select the existing partition to install on, or create a new one. Finish setup as normal, and wait for the system to succesfully boot to desktop. After verifying that it boots solely from the Raptor, you may shut down and reconnect the 200GB drive. Problem solved.
 
Is your IDE drive jumper set to slave? Not sure if it matters or not. I installed a Raptor a couple of weeks ago and have a 120Gb IDE drive for storage. It works perfectly but the IDE drive doesn't have an OS on it.

Formatted the IDE drive clean, and it now boots to the SATA drive :) .
 
I didn't think you wanted to erase the drive, or else I'd have recommended that also :D .
