Well I finally got my 10000RPM SATA Raptor working, but I'm not noticing much difference in speed. I boot up maybe a little quicker but Doom 3 still loads pretty slow. The quick saves are nice and speedy now, but that's about it. Is that about what I should be expecting? Perhaps there's some way to configure things to take advantage of something?

EDIT: Oh, my previous drive was a 7200RPM 8MB 120GB WD drive
 
well you may not notice a big difference in speed to begin with

however, for me programs seem to install a lot faster as well as anything to requires a lot of hard disk usage

normal stuff like the internet isn't going to be a lot faster, because hard drive speed is not what makes it slow

also, it may not seem faster, but when you use a different computer, that computer will seem slow - kinda how when you watch a DVD, you don't think 'wow the picture quality is so good!', but when they are out of DVDs and you have to rent the VHS version and you goto watch it and think 'wow this sucks, how did I ever use to watch these'
 
CPU and RAM also effects load times in games, its not like a pure file transfer. So you will probably only see a 20% increase at most.

Ha, that'll keep me warm at night!

For real though, I am thinking my loading times have decreased quite a bit. All in all I'd say I'm happy.
 
hey can you tell a difference in noise? my raptor seems so loud compared to my other drives :(

I really can't hear either hard drive over my fans (my video card is kind of loud), so I would say that it doesn't appear to be too loud.
 
You wont see any diffrience really unless you are doing something that always access your files. the best way to see this is take a stick or ram out and just run with like 128 mb or ram so it almost always go to the Hard drive for data and then you can do your test and see how much faster things run. But with over 1 gb or so of memory a Hard disk to me now is just really for storage not really speed. Only on the initial load of data until I reboot
