Hey guys,

When I installed my Seagate 120GB Barracuda / 8MB Cache / SATA onto my IC7-MAX3 for some reason it comes right up as Primary IDE......i didn't have to install any special drivers or anything when installing windows.

Yet, looking at the Abit/MAX3 forums, other people did? Am I doing something wrong? Would this also hinder any performance? First SATA drive so.... kinda new to it.

Any comments are appreciated.

Hello The Donut,

That behaviour is perfectly normal for any SATA hard drive that's connected to an SATA port that's specific to the Intel ICH5(R) Southbridge SATA/PATA controller. The ICH5(R) is treated as an ATAPI controller for Windows purposes. The only time that you'll need the Intel SATA RAID drivers installed during initial Windows setup is if you have two SATA drives connected to the ICH5R ports and you have RAID enabled in the system BIOS.

As for the other SATA ports on your mobo, they are connected to a separate onboard SATA controller, which is treated as a SCSI controller for the purposes of Windows Setup - and thus requires an OEM-specific driver during the aftermarket driver install phase of Windows Setup (after formatting, but before the system reboots).

Now I understand!

But, the question lies, would there be any performance increase if I were to move it to the other controller and install the SCSI/SATA drivers?

You are using the faster of the 2 onboard controllers. If windows detected it without installing the drivers, you may want to install the intel drivers (after setting a restore point) .
