SATA setup question

I just got my first SATA 320 gig western digital drive yesterday and am having problems getting it to be recognized by windows 2000. I have no jumpers on it as that was the default setting. This is the only SATA drive in my system, which is a abit KW7-raid motherboard with built in SATA controller that has 2 slots to stick the SATA cord into. i am guessing i need to jumper the drive if it is going to be the only drive used by my SATA controller on the mobo? the manual had no description of when to use the different jumpers, just that they existed and how to set them. i will keep trying to find another forum post on this but if any of you guys know what im doing wrong id greatly appreciate any info on how to fix this.

You shouldn't need to install any jumpers on the drive...

Is the drive showing up in Device Manager and just not showing up as a drive letter in Windows explorer? If that's the case this is perfectly normal - you will need to partition and format the new drive.

You can do this in Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Storage Management.

sorry, i should have mentioned that. no it does not show up under the device mannager, it does show al my other hard drives though, but it does not show the drive as unpartitioned/formated or formated at all. i have tried both the SATA 1 and 2 slots that are on the motherboard but both have the same symptoms of no hard drive showing up.

Is SATA enabled in the BIOS, and if it is, how do you have it setup in combination with the PATA.

Like the poster above me said, look in your BIOS to see if the SATA controller is even enabled.

Does the drive show up in the BIOS?

Have you installed the sata drivers from your motherboard manufacturer yet? Here are the VIA drivers and here are the Sil3112 ones. HTH

i will give the driver install/reinstall a try.
i did check the bios(pre posting my questio) and the SATA has 2 options IDE or raid
it was on ide and that is what i left it on as i am not createing a raid array with the SATA

I have tried uninstalling and reinstaling the drivers from the CD that came with my motherboard as well as the ones listed as most current on VIA's/abit website. i have also done all the other updates for my motherboard as well.
i still get this error under ..

VIA SATA RAID controller
SCSI and RAID controllers
VIA Technologies, Inc.
PCI bus 0, device 15, function 0
This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Click Troubleshooter to start the troubleshooter for this device.

Do i have to use the raid option to use this controller? i just have one hard drive and do not wish to create a raid array. I also have the rocketraid 100 controller(not on the motherboard, but a PCI card) for 2 other raid arrays that are IDE, which work. there isnt anny issues with rocket raid and VIA SATA raid controllers is therE?
i am so confused right now, installing a hard drive should be easy as hell, but this is growing into a huge pain in the ass.
any suggestions would be very much appreciated

edit:
i have the hard drive without a jumper on it right now, however that should not affect the functioning of the SATA controller. for shits i will disconect the hard drive and see if i can get the controller to say it is ok, then i can start narrowing the culprits down

so i think it is the damn jumpers, What speed should i restrict it to? isnt that what the jumpers do on the drive?

EDIT: problem solved.
it was the damned jumpers
the 150 setting jumper solved it.


with broad spectrum and no jumper on the hard drive i get the error code #10 This device cannot start for the SATA controller.
if i have the drive disconected i get no errors, i guess there is only one option left, the SATA 150mbps jumper before i start banging my head against the wal!!! aargh i hope this works
