Hi I am extremely new at dealing with HDD's I know I have an IDE hd but I would like to replace it with something else. What would be the best kind of HDD for gaming and quicker transfers? I look at some of the stickies but got confuzzled and gave up.

the primary performance advantages are higher areal density
(the more bits per square inch on the platter) and a higher rotational speed (fatser the drive spins)

what that allows to happen is more data passes under the read\write heads in the same time period than a drive with less density and slower speed, in addition if the head has to move to a different track (further in or out on the platter) and it arrives just a little too late to read what its looking for, since its spinning faster, it will come back around quicker, thats called less latency

Id highly recommend you read Micheal Schutte's As the HDD Disc Spins Series

for a single user and a single HDD, the differences in the interface speed between IDE (Parallel AT Attachment \ PATA) and SATA (Serial AT Attachment) arent really all that much at this time, when compared to areal density or rotational speed, and the little there is only comes into play when the buffer (memory cache in the drive) dumps or gets filled, whats called a burst, caches can play a big role, and how "smart" a drive is, basically how well it keeps track of and how efficiently it will access the data.

that said some rotational speeds are only available in SATA or SCSI and not in IDE\PATA
like what most will say, the 73GB Western Digital Raptor which spins at 10.000rpm and has a "modern" areal density
 
So really a 200GB DiamondMax 10 with 16mb cache would be a good choice for gaming?
 
Next to the crazy priced Raptor, that would be my next choice (And mine for my upcomming rig :) )

A Western Digital Raptor has really low seek times, and that is good for about anything :)

They do have a realitivly small capacities tho.

You got to see whats more important to you, space or speed. I choose speed because I only use 40 - 60 GB at one time anyway before I format and do a clean slate for myself.
 
Maxtor's 16MB drives offer the best combination of performance, capacity, and value (on the desktop) of any drive today. The 16MB buffer makes it the fastest 7200 drive on the market, it's available in capacities up to 300GB for tasks like archiving video that require high capacity per spindle, and it's not much more expensive per GB than an 8MB drive.

I may rework the Buyer's Guide to have the 16MB Maxtors as the best all around >200GB drive, and the Hitachi 7K250 160GB as the best all around <200GB drive. I will conteplate this some more before making changes. Any comments on this idea?
