1. I have a sata raptor 10k drive, but I had a question about the power input cables. Do you need to connect both the Sata power cable and the 4-pin molex cable?, because my drive has both.

2. I was also curious about some of the huge terabyte machines i've seen on the forums, how do they accommodate all the drives? I know for sure no PSU has enough molex or sata power cables, so do they chain them? with what?

3. Also curious, what is a good Sata HDD controller card? Thinking of creating a mass storage server when i have the cash to invest in HDD's.
 
1. if you plugg both sata power and molex power connectors in HD at same time = dead drive.
2. get sata-molex adaptor...ie per molex adaptor you get 2 sata power connectors.
3. no idea, run onboard sata controllers.
 
They put both SATA power connectors and a Molex connectors on there for convenience. Some people don’t have power supplies with SATA power connectors. You use one or the other, not both. Personally, I think the SATA power connectors are poorly designed and prefer using the old-style Molex connector whenever possible.

My favorite RAID/SATA controller is made by 3Ware. Of the few controllers I have tried, 3Ware has much better drivers, software and support. I hear LSI makes a good controller too…

1) Just one or the other.
2) Either y-splitter cables or enclosures like this, with 5 drives in 3 5.25" bays and 2 molex connections shared between the 5 drives.
3) Areca is fastest, Highpoint 2220/2320 is the cheapest worth buying, 3ware is in the middle. You can expand with any of those cards (meaning buy 3 drives now, add another when you need more space, add another later...) and I usually recommend one end of the spectrum or the other. The Highpoint is cheap but plenty fast for media storage - you really only need 1MB/s to watch DVD movies from hard drive, and you'd likely get several hundred from the Highpoint. The advantage of the 3ware and Areca cards is slight for most desktop applications, and there's a big price difference - $250 for the Highpoint, $500 for 3ware, $550 for Areca. Those prices are for the 8-port versions. The Areca and 3ware have 12-port versions for ~$800, and the Areca continues up to 24 ports.
