SATA diagnostics utlity?

I am looking for a way to diagnose potential problems with SATA drives. The Maxtor website has PowerMax, which only works on supported chipsets, of which Nvidia Nforce 4 is not part of. Stupid Maxtor.

Is there any other way to diagnose SATA drives?
 
is this what you originally found? maybe Tack Tech has something for you.

from the few sites i've visited, it seems there is a utility in powermax that allows you to test drive integrity.

Tacktech has the exact same PowerMax utility as on Maxtor's website.
 
I don't think there is a HDD low-level checking utility that is not either made by the HDD manufacturer or built into some RAID-card's drivers.

My Promise SX4 has "media patrol" which does a low-level scan of any attached HDD, but you'd need that card, which doesn't help you.
 
This sucks. That's all there is to it.

Talk about a major oversight on the manufacturer's part! Both the motherboard and hard drive manufacturers.

So, how then, am I supposed to run the diagnostic utility to determine if the drive i bad or not? No wonder they offer a 5 year warranty on their drives. Nobody will be able to know if the drive is bad or not!!!

if it doesn't work anymore, it's bad..

but yes, this part stinks on Maxtor's side. Have you tried to run WD's diagnostics on it?
 
It ended up being a bad XP installation, but still, I want to be able to scan the drives in the future if I need to.

Apparently the Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostics allow me to run a "quick test" on my Maxtor drive, however, you may need a WD drive installed in order to use them.

Note:
1. I had a WD drive in my system
2. My Maxtor was a PATA drive. I won't be able to test it on a SATA drive anytime soon.
 
I have every manufacturer's hard drive utility there is all on 1 CD. None of them are going to work for SATA.
