I've heard alot of people using the SATA and using a IDE for storage. I'm kinda confused, just exactly what belongs in the SATA ? I'm guessing OS and applications?
 
well alot of people have had ide drives, and moving to satas (usually raptors) they put them on the C drive for faster games/programs/ect..and the raptors arnt very big so they stick with their old ide and use it for storage. thats what im guessing heh

im STILL on my old 5400 rpm hard drive :( and i plan on upgrading to a raptor for my bday, but im also going to get a 120gb sata. for storage.
 
SATA is just a hard drive interface like IDE. Many people like to purcahse a smaller fast drive for their OS and then a slower/larger drive for all the storage and such. The current SATA drive leader, the Raptor, is probably what you have a seen a lot of people use. There is really no speed increase to using SATA right now though, it's just an interface. If they made a Raptor using the standard IDE interface (also called PATA) its results would be the same.
 
Yes, currently, there is no real performance difference between SATA and IDE interfaces. SATA drive cables are, however, much smaller and thinner than the IDE ribbon cables, if that matters to you at all.
