I am looking for SAS hard drives for a new file server.
My requirements and preferences are:

1) 4TB is preferred. If price scales within reason 6TB and 8TB drives will be considered.
2) PMR is preferred. SMR will not be used.
3) Native 4k is preferred.


Recommendations?
 
Are most SAS drives similar as far as reliability is concerned? I know the manufacturers list good figures plus a 5 year warranty in their datasheets.
 
Hard to say. Some independent studies put Hitachi ahead, but metrics on enterprise drives are uncommon. Any business should be taking into account expected failure rates and planning accordingly with redundancy and backups. If this is personal use however, I'm not sure why you'd want to spend considerably more on SAS drives over SATA.
 
I am going with SAS for data integrity reasons. There isn't that much of a price difference. I plan on getting the hard drives from supermicro. I would think there would be better odds not having to RMA the drives compared to newegg.
 
You are mistaken if you think SAS will provide you with better data integrity than SATA. I'm also not sure how you plan on getting disks through Supermicro when they do not sell products directly. You would have to go through one of their system integrators and pay a hefty premium.
