installed my brand new sapphire 5850 and now i keep getting blue screens of death and can only start up in safe mode

everything ive tried did not work, i put back in my old card, still getting the blue screens of death, only able to start up in safe mode

did the card kill my RAM? everything seems to point to bad RAM

i keep getting the 'machine_exception_error'

with both cards now, should i just put in the 5850 and try doing a full wipe and reinstall? first thing i did before putting the new card in was remove the Nvidia drivers and on restart, i turned the computer off, tried turning back on, couldnt get the drivers to install in safe mode

any ideas?

i JUST installed a 5850 today.

i did NOT need to remove nvidia 8800 drivers. On that front, you should be fine.

if you had bad ram, the machine wouldn't get to a BSOD at all. it wouldn't POST without some kind of error.

thank you, so do you think it was just something about removing the VGA drivers then putting in the 5850 and the system not recognizing it at all?

the drivers shouldn't affect ANYTHING.

ok, i had the EXACT same issue as you.

my solution. I have Vista x64. When i got to the "Windows Error Recovery" screen i chose "use the last settings that worked"

BAM! My machine is running fine. I uninstalled nvidia drivers, and then downloaded the new ati drivers.

no problems at all with having a nvidia card in here and switching right to ATI

EDIT, you sound like you got it running, is it working now?

im gonna try it again once the kids go to bed, thanks again

i guess the real question is, why is this happening? shouldnt it just plug right in with no issues and work? haha

i popped my 7950gt in and thats how im here, but i kept getting the same error, got into safe mode, installed nvidia drivers and it worked

when i tried it last, yes, but the 7950 was giving me the same error on start up until i got into safe mode and installed the nvidia drivers

is that normal? going to try this all again in about 20 mins once my daughter passes out on my lap :D

i did almost the same thing you are doing today. went from a machine that had a 8800gts and installed a XFX5850

I think there is POSSIBLY something to be said about whether XP will just use some "default" drivers and WORK, or if it is trying to still use the nvidia drivers for your ATI card.

Its a thought, because with my Vista, it didn't care.

there was a bad batch of nvidia drivers prior to the ones out.

a buddy told me APPARENTLY the drivers would shut off the GPU fan, and kill it.

MAYBE, you had those, and ure fan shut off and overheated??? or maybe because those drivers were bad, they just don't work for you?

i updated to the newest drivers when they came out, installed MSi afterburner to make sure the fan was going as well with the 7950

i think im gonna do a clean wipe and reinstall and see if that does it, or if it will even let me get that far, good thing the new Asus Crosshair IV boards are coming out later this month....

ok, got to my main OS with the card installed, so far so good, writing this as im installing the new 10.5 beta drivers

just got an install package failure... hmmmm

ok, got it to finally install, i downloaded just the drivers themselves from the ati site

i removed the Nvidia drivers, did NOT reboot and installed the Ati one, rebooted and its working fine now :D

ok, im really really glad i got this thing to work, the performance boost over my 7950 is WOWOWOWOWOW

this thing is seriously sick, played L4D2 at FULL everything, 16x MSAA and 8x AA without any hickups at all

AND the GPU is staying at a cool 31c under full load

with the MW2 coupon that came with the card, im downloading it right now, so ill be able to test it out fully this weekend

wow this thing has some balls to it, my 7950 was hitting 63c during gameplay

Congrats man! If you are happy now, wait till you decide to crossfire that badboy with another 5850 some day in the future!

I'll post a picture later when I get home. Got the BSOD error again, but I think that's from the sound card coming loose from it's pci slot.

cant just upload pics directly to the site?

wheres a good free site to host them then

its currently 48F out and i have the sliding glass door in the living room cracked, blowing directly into my case and the card is reading 21c.... this is nuts

and dook, send me a message at Wolvie56X@yahoo.com and i can send you a pic of the load GPU temps from my iPhone, with the door closed and everything at room temp, was barely cracking 36c

I've never seen load temps below 65 and I have had single & dual 5850s, and now a 5970. It makes sense now though, you are fucking around with open cases and cold ambient air, neither of which I am inclined to use.

i have it in a Coolermaster 830 stacker case, the side panels are on, its a single card setup for right now, but i do have a little fan inside the case blowing air onto the card, and yes, the door is open and there is cool air blowing in on it

yesterday when it was 80 degrees out, it was barely breaking 38c in Aliens Vs. Predator, the new one

my BFG 7950 was cracking the 60c barrier with the game in the same situation

also my CPU is water cooled with the radiator on the back on the case by the power supply, with a 120mm fan on top of the case sucking air upwards out of the case, with a 120mm fan on the hard drive bay blowing air back through the case, with a 120mm fan sucking air off the radiator towards the wall

maybe just awesome air flow? but the BFG 7950 had the same air flow, and it also had a GPU cooling fan under neath it directly sucking hot air off the card and blowing it out the back of the case, i took that out because the 5850 is alot bigger
