I just read GamePC's review and my Solarism monitor has less contrast ratio and the same
pixel refresh rate so my reaction to this monitor is :eek:

Hey kycysymet, those two links about the samsung display say different response times. One says in the fourth quarter there it will be 16ms. But how will you know? The faster one has the same name?

Anyway, why don't they use the 8ms for all their panels? I remember a link about it, http://www.samsung.com/PressCenter/...seq=20031127_0000026837&type=DigitalMediaNews .



Edit: I see the name is different for the 4th quarter as LTM240M1 now. The 25ms one is LTM240W1.
 
I recently sent an email to Samsung and inquired about the new LTM240M1 LCD panel. This is the response I got:

I’m sorry about the late response.

Regarding 24” M1, this product is on hold.

Current product is LTM240W1-L03.

I then asked if the hold was indefinate or temporary, and this is the responce I got:

We do not know.

Meanwhile, we are promoting W1.

The person I spoke with is supposedly in charge of LCD sales in the US. I wonder what the L03 means. I wonder if they are revisions to the original 24" panel and if so, I wonder what is different about them.

If anyone else has any info, please pass it on.

Henweigh, here on a dutch forum we are discussing the arrival of the LTM240M1 as well. One member has found a link to news of a new 242MP multipurpose monitor of Samsung having a 1920x1200 16ms 24" screen indicating that it uses the new LTM240M1 screen instead of the W1 version; used in the 243T (25ms) the W1-L03. The 240T was made of the LTM240W1-L01 first and later revised with the LTM240W1-L02 screen. Last year (end 2003) Samsung launched the LTM240W1-L03 screen which Samsung didn't want to use for a 3rd revision of the 240T but gave it a new packaging and marketed it as a new product: the 243T. Only to find out that is biggest competitor LG-Philips came with a 23" 16ms in Q1 2004 (used in the HP, BenQ, Sony, Apple, Philips, LG) to steel the whole wide LCD screen enthusiast-gaming market away that started to emerge because of dropped pricing.

Can you use you way in at Samsung Sales US to hear about the 242MP? When will it be launched? Does it use the LTM240M1? Does this mean that (must be) production of the LTM240M1 has started slowly? When will it ramp up to volume for the PC-monitor version, the 243T successor?
Here in Europe we don't get any answer from Samsung at all. Your help would be appreciated!

who quoted you that ? I bought one a month ago at Fry's for $1799 and LOVE this baby. WoW look fan_freaking_tastic, as well as CS:S both played at 1920x1200res :D

Any Ghosting problem due to the slow response time of 25ms?
 
I almost pulled the trigger on a 243T, earlier today, until I saw the 25ms response time. Outpost.com is selling it for $1699 after a $100 rebate w/free shipping. Looks like Samsung wants to clear out existing inventories before releasing the 16ms 243T.

I also looked at Sony's new 23" 16ms widescreen, too. It's very nice, with an extremely thin bezel. I'm not ready to drop $2100 on a monitor, though. Unless the upcoming Dell 2405FPW has a good price, I'll buy HP's L2335. It's got the same panel as the Sony, but can be had for $1300 - $1600.
 
I bought one at Fry's (new, unopened) 3 weeks ago and returned it pronto. HORRIBLE ghosting. DVDs are smeary; games are unplayable. I don't know why some people report seeing no ghosting on this monitor. Maybe I got an older unit.

You mean a 243T? Their is no older 243T model only the 240T. The 243T is only 1 year old (released end 2003). Strange; the GamePC.com review stated:

The unit has a stated pixel refresh rate of 25ms, which means that the unit should be playable with modern, fast paced games like Painkiller and Quake III without any blurring or ghosting. As we've observed before, the larger the screen, the more noticeable the effects of a sub-par pixel refresh are on gaming, so we weren't expecting much from the 243T in terms of gaming performance. After testing a number of gaming titles, we were actually impressed with the refresh rate of the 243T, as most games showed absolutely no signs of ghosting. Fast motion games only showed very slight ghosting when performing high contrast color changes, but honestly, unless you were specifically looking for these signs, one would be hard pressed to spot them.

While we wouldn't go so far as to say the Samsung 243T is a "gamers" monitor, it certainly can be used for gaming and still look fantastic.

The link you provided for the recently introduced Samsung 242MP claimed a contrast ratio of 1000:1. If the new revision of the 243T gets this panel, that is a more compelling reason to wait for it than the faster response time. I don't believe I have ever seen such a high contrast ratio for a LCD (claimed or otherwise). That would be a boon for graphic designers and digital artists of all kinds.
 
Heck, I'm still waiting for a public release of Samsung's 16ms S-PVA technology. 16ms without all the shortcomings (or compromises, as it were) of the S-IPS technology will be a boon for everyone- I'd like two in the 17" varaity, please.

Am curious what you mean by the shortcomings or compromises of the S-IPS Panels. I honestly don't know what the short comings are between the two technologoes so your thoughts there would be appreciated.
 
Apollo, IdiotInCharge, if you take a look at henweigh's response, it appears like a 16ms 24" Samsung is off for quite a while now. It would be appreciated, henweigh's, if you could check your Samsung contact about the ambiguity in the MP242 launch and LTM240M1 production delay.

Regarding the contrast ratio, I think it has been mispelled in MacWorld article. The Samsung specs only state that the LTM240M1 has 130cd/M2 highere brightness compared to the LTM240W1 aka 243T screen.

Regarding specs and release dates, we just have to wait, henweigh could you help us out?

Well, I know very little about it, LCD technoloigies are still a bit confusing to me. However, I have pieced togather the idea that in order for any technology to attain lower than 25ms response times, something had to be sacrifice- be it the color contrast (meaning fewer colors, a la the 18bit vs. 24bit panels), the viewing angle, the brightness, what have you. Basically going off that Samsung's 25ms PVA technology was perfect in all respects save for response time- which for a gamer, gives reason to be exiced when a 16ms version of such a technology is announced (the new 243T), in the hopes that it would also come in sizes throughout the product line (maybe a 174P or something of the likes).
