I just purchased a Samsung DLP and the guy tried to sell me a $200 surge protector and I kind of laughed...

He said it really needs it because the unit he had was rated for 6900 Joules and anything less than that will fry the DLP TV.

My question is what kind of surge protector is required to keep this thing long and healthy?

Thanks for any info!

i think you need it, but not for the reason he said.

just to say, I work at Best Buy and I tell my customers that the light bulb inside there is very sensitive to surges and static. In truth, it is. Will you see a difference? Not particularly, some people can - some people can't. But what it does do is help prolong the life of your lightbulb.

That, and I personally don't want my 4500 dollar tv to die due to a surge...

EDIT: Nice! I have the same TV as you, mine is just last year's model...

Some people said that there is no difference between his recommended protector. Here is what he suggested...

For the price, I think I could be fine with the following item.

On that note - I have a 5 year extended warranty and that also includes bulb replacement.
