Alright well, I RMAed the Seagate HDD that I thought I had a problem with before and the same problem is happening again.

To those who don't remember, my computer would shut down when there was more than one task running (ie: Solataire, & Windows Update).

I RMAed the HDD, and I already got a BSOD installing WinXP Pro. My next guess is the RAM. Any other guesses? It's NOT HEAT. I've checked BIOS temps....

The specs are:

Shuttle SK41G
512MB Kingston PC2100
80GB Seagate 7200 RPM
AMD Athlon XP 2400+
Lite-On CDRW
ATI AIW 9600pro
 
Just from the sounds of it I would say PSU, no way would I have ever said hard drive. I don't think there is anyway possible for a hard drive failure.

When you mean shutdown, do you mean it would power itself off, or Windows would shutdown (same way it does if you click Start > Shut Down)?
 
Yea, I thought PSU too, but then I looked at my system (specs in sig) and put that thought in the back of my head.

By shut down I mean, the entire system would shut off and it would just start itself up again from POST.
 
PS sounds like it could be the culprit.

You should test your MEM big time before you go any further.

run that for several hours. The only acceptable result is 0 errors.

Are you OCing your box?

(I didn't see your original thread, please post troubleshooting you have already done)

Umm i assume u mean ur PSU specs versus ur hardware. Well umm it can be a 1000w or 200w. If they go bad they are bad period. Its like saying "its a honda it can't be broken" =D But from the sounds of it either PSU or ram. Try turning down ur ram timings and/or run memtest86 and see whats up.
 
I got Windows loaded and I haven't had any problems as of yet (I'm installing drivers/Windows Update). After I'm done, I'll run MemTest86 off of my ultimate bootdisc :)

I prayed and it worked pretty much.

But I spoke too soon.

As soon as I started up Windows, I went to the Startup/Recovery tab in the System settings and disabled automatic rebooting.

I got the BSOD.

It said something about driver errors and enabling pooling (?) and that I would need to reboot. The error looked something like this:

00xVXD0000000000000

It wouldn't let me boot back into Windows again.

So, now I'm running Memtest. I'll be waiting here all night waiting for an answer so keep em coming guys!

If the ram is REALLY screwed up u should see a error within the 1st run. Otherwise drop ur memory timings and try again.

Ic... i said memory timings down. Fail-Safe is like suicide. Ur just resetting to REALLY bad defaults without knowing what caused the problem initially.
 
Ok, so how would I lower the timings? I went into Frequency/Voltage Control and there were only fields for FSB, Spread Sprectrum, and DIMM Identifier (or something like that).

EDIT: I found it. I lowered everything down by 1. RAM is now running at 200mhz instead of 266. Windows gets to that screen with the countdown and says that it wasn't properly shut down. I can choose from different ways to load Windows (Regular, last good config, etc) and with each one I choose, it gives me a solid white bar at the bottom of the screen and freezes.

Umm ram lower is opposite of what u think. In the sense of 3 is SLOWER then 2 (u want slower). So double check that as i assume u did it with the normal thinking.
 
Lowered memory timings and re-installed Windows without a BSOD!

Gonna see if it happens again when I start putting drivers on...

Although, I don't have any power for the USB ports? WTF?

I have a Thumbdrive with some drivers/info on it that I would like to get, but it's not getting any power. How would I fix this?

Man, when it rains it pours.

Remember when u did fail safe? Probably turned off ur usb ports.......
 
I successfully ran Prime95 for 8 hours w/o errors or warnings.

But I still have no power to my USB ports. Any help on this matter?
 
I figured out the problem!

On the mobo, there's a jumper for setting the FSB to 133 from 100. I guess it didn't like my processor/memory combination so it would reboot!

I also fixed the USB problem after clearing CMOS.

Pesky jumpers.

USB problem u made when u did fail safe! ;D But glad u found it.
 
I'm having the same problem with a Segate barracuda 80 gig drive i just got, BSOD on one of the restarts during installing XP. When i asked my cisco teacher about it, he said to try a different IDE channel or a controller card. I haven't gotten a chance to do that yet but you might try it, see if it helps.
