Hey,
I had to pull my Nvidia geforce 7600GS out of my desktop due to a winey fan. I've been using my backup (an ATI Radeon Rage 9800SE). I'm really at my witz end with it, though, as the ATI drivers for linux (my main OS) blow, and won't support the newer X server, nor my screen resolution (1920x1200, they top out at 1600x1200). Not to mention it's simply less of a card with less, older, RAM, and a slower GPU.
In any event.
A member on here, when I made an original post 1 month ago (yeah, I take time to get to things
) pointed me in the direction of the S1, and passive cooling. I feel this is a good idea as this will probably become a headless server in the not too distant future. I had a few questions before I purchase it though (which I'd like to be today).
1) Has anybody purchased the S1 before? Does it come with thermal paste on it already (I'd expect it to, but who knows, I'd hate to waste twice the shipping time because it didn't), and if not, what kind would you recommend for this application? (for the love of god not that dual compound arctic silver (no compounds at all), I got tricked into that when I bought a new CPU HSF and still got it.
2) From what I've read, and what I've looked at, this S1 cooler should fit my GeForce 7600GS no problem, right? It lists 7600 as a compatible card, not quite sure what the "GS" changes though.
3) Most importantly, I've heard from a few sources, including the one that directed me towards passive cooling, that the downfall with passive cooling is that it relies on the stock air flow, and nothing more, for the voltage regulator's heat. I don't know anything about the voltage regulator, not even where on the board to find it. I have a very large case, but when I convert this to a dedicated server, might get a regular standard size ATX case, assuming that case, from what I hear, the S1 will be more than enough to dissipate the heat on the GPU, but will it, in a regular ATX case with the side on, have enough air flow to cool the voltage regulator? I'd really like to not blow out my card (or even stress it) because I decided to go for a passive cooling system. I'm assuming if the voltage regulator goes the GPU will eat itself or trigger inconsistently and glitch. I figure it's stressed under gaming, but I don't game much on it (though I'd like to know that if I do, it's not going to overheat on me). Would just the S1 do the trick? Will it cool both the voltage regulator and the GPU in a closed, standard ATX case, in ~70-74 tops degree temperatures? I know it's only a $90-$100 dollar card, but I don't want to buy a new one.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you, sorry for the long posts.
