I notice most of my video cards have S video plug, I am not sure how it works since I never had any experience with it before. I want to transfer my miniDV tapes for my old camcorder to my computer. I don't have an S video cable in hand to test this out, but if I get one will my video card (8600GTS) pick up the signal and enable me to view the movie on my computer screen as if it's connected to a TV? If that works I suppose finding a software that records it wouldn't be hard, any suggestions?

Well I found a S-Video cable in my box-o-cables. I connected my camcorder to my monitor with S-Video and it seems to play my tapes in fine quality without any problem. Though if I try to hook up my camcorder to my video card and play the tape like I normally would, nothing happens. I am guessing S-video only goes one way and the one on my video card is merely an output cannot receive signal at all. If that's the case, what do I need to get S-video and composite video/sound to play on Windows environment?

the s video plug on a standard GPU is an output. For recording something from an external source you'll need a tv tuner card.

a tv tuner card *or* a video card with VIVO (which are becoming quite rare anymore)
you could also go ahead and have a look at external capture boxes, pinnacle and plextor make quite a few, for internal boards, I've had good luck with leadtek, cheap, and gets the job done
