Im thinking of getting one cuz i want to build another computer, but dont have another monitor.

My questions are:

1) when switching between the 2 computers, does it hurt your monitor?

2) is there a delay when switching?

3) whats a good one to get? Im currently looking at this one click

thanks

I like dlink products, for the price vs performance they can't be beaten. but for the kvm i'd choose a linksys model, i know it'll be a few bucks more, but it'll be worth it.

1.) it doesn't stress any components really, it should just fall under the normal wear and tear a monitor gets. i mean i guess if you keep switching over n over n over n over n over, etc again it could damage the monitor?

2.) i can't speak for the dlink, but i mean there will be just a small delay like 1 sec or so. kinna like when you turn on the comp, takes a sec for the screen to popup... that's all the delay should be.

3.) i'd get the linksys.

This one seems to get better reviews. You can spend lots on a KVM depending on how many bells and whistles you need - USB, Audio, etc.

cables are usually the expensive part of KVM settups.

and no, it won't stress your monitor much at all. it keeps an active connection to each computer and just switches over... i have a 2 port belkin KVM and i absolutely love it. there's a slight delay, but only like 1 or 2 seconds max... nothing long annoying or noticable.

also, that one your looking at will only switch mouse keyboard and video. if you want it to switch USB and audio, etc.. you'll need another one...

i recommend belkin, but i'm biased becuase i have one :p i'm also not a big fan of dlink. (ps: my switch + cables cost about 100$ well over a year ago)

i've used several different brands of KVMs and most are pretty much the same. down side to buying is the price of the cables if they are not included. i recently got a 2 port IOGear (the little green one with the attached cables) i really like it. switch over is less than a second and it supports my USB mouse attached via PS2 adapter. my buddies Belkin does not.
