RV770: AMD's first ever GPU?

After reading some articles on the RV770 architecture, it seems like the GPU is a new design after all eventhough it is still based on the R600. RV670 is on the other hand is just a die shrink of the R600 without any major architecture changes.

So is RV770 the first GPU that was designed by ATi after joining AMD? If this is true then I must say that I'm quite impressed by AMD's first product as a GPU company.

Well most of the work was done by the team that did Xeno. So I would say it's still ATI.
 
As Hypernova said, most of the work was done by Xenos. That's not to say AMD didn't end up contributing to it, but the primary work and architecture was designed and enhanced by ATI.

That being said, looking at the rage3d overview, it looks like nothing was left untouched this time around. Truly amazing turnaround on the architecture...
 
now they need to take it the other way and bring that kind of power to there cpus
 
if it was amd 4870 will probably end on par with 8800gt thank god it is ati :)
 
Maybe not. AMD purchased ATI less than 2 years ago. Although cycles may be 18 months, that includes designs done in parallel at various stages (i.e. AMD started working on the R800 months ago). The next GPU will probably be AMD's "first."

What's notable about the RV770 is that AMD didn't botch the release like the last 2 GPUs, which was also a regular problem before ATI was purchased. Not only that, but it's also a very solid product, ATI's best since the R300.
 
The layout of the SIMD cores is the exact same as the RV670, there's just 10 of them instead of 4. They dropped the ringbus in favor of a crossbar and did some work on their texturing units and fixed AA resolve. Not sure really how AMD could have helped with any of that.
