I'm currently ruining two power supply's in my sever case but one is the 550 watt is connected to my mother board and CPU fan and cdrom the other power suply two an 450 watt is controlled by a relay running off the 5 volts line of the first to turn it on which power my fans. Can I run other hds or an new video card off the second one thats isolated from the mother board?

I want to do something similar. I have 6 HD's and would like to power them along with various other fans and lights off a second PS. I even have the space directly above my 1st PS to hook one up.

How would I go about hooking up a 2nd PS to kick on when my 1st one does?

I used an five volt reed relay to connect the two power supply's. I take and hook the five
volt red and black ground to the coil of the relay then I hook the fourth wire in on the 20 pin connector clasp side left to right on the second power supply which is green and an ground black to the reed switch, which shorts the green to black which turns on the second power supply when the first powers up. I make these for Friends all the time.

You can do the same thing just by tying the two PS_ON leads of your two supplies together, no relay needed.

I can't see why you can't run a video card off the second PSU.

I separate the two power supply so I can take them out of my case easily I use an 20 pin socket and an four pin socket and an relay and LEDs to show me that all the voltages work 3.3,5,12 etc. I do this cause I always upgrading.

gee, is it possible that there would be grounding issues when running a video card off the second PSU i.e potential difference between the ground from the AGP slot and the ground supplied by the molex connector?

You shouldn't have any problems.

If you've got both of your metal-cased power supplies bolted to a metal case, then you're guaranteed not to have any problems. If you're using an acrylic case and/or a painted or plastic-cased power supply that might not ground so well, then it's probably a good idea to strap the two supplies' grounds together.

My only real worry is power supply sequencing. But both supplies should simultaneously come up, and a properly designed video card should not blow itself up if 12V isn't plugged into it.

Yes both are grounded ones an achieve 500 and the others an sparkle 400 which can with my sever case when I bought it a few years back. by the way which is the better power supply? I figured i'd hook the better to the mother board.
