I'm not sure if this is the normal temp for this HSF but it seems a little on the hot side to me. I've currently got a Tt Silent Boost K7 in my rig right now, and have been running it for a few months now. Only recently (about a week ago) have I noticed that the temps have raised a bit by about 4-5 degrees. It used to run at ~46-47c idle and 53c load. Now it's running at around ~50-51c idle. I haven't changed a thing except for adding a second HD. My case airflow seems decent so what could contribute to this? I've reseated the HSF a couple of times already.. *shrugs*

Also, these temps are identical to those in my BIOS. I've read in another post somewhere that the temps taken from directly from the mobo probe are about 10c hotter. Is this true? Whenever I touch the HSF, it's only slightly warm to the touch.
 
well it is summer, everyones temps go up. you say you added a second harddrive, what kind was it? that could make the case temp go up, which would raise the CPU temp, but that seems like a big jump.

about the heat sink feel, ill tell you what i tell everyone. your processor is always putting out a lot of heat...remove the heatsink on a board that doesnt use the built in thermal protection and youll see what I mean (yes AMDs do have it, but its up to the mobo makers if they use it). the purpose of a heatsink is to soak up the heat and put it into the air. so if your heatsink is soaking up the heat, IT SHOULD BE HOT. i'm not saying it should be burning, because that means your air isnt blowing right, but it should be very warm and should get cooler or hotter if you make the fan run faster or slower, respectivly.

Thanks for your reply. Yeah, I added another 120gig WD Caviar SE SATA (same one as my primary HD).. I figured this might have some impact on it. My room's temp is around 25 degrees all the time. I mean, don't get me wrong here, I know ~50 degrees is fine for my proc, but like everyone else, I'd rather see them below the 50 line ;)

Also, my case airflow is fine I think, most people claim their case temps are around 32-36 degrees, I've got mine at 28-29c. Don't worry, I'm not complaining, I'm just curious as to why the temps made such a drastic jump ;)

it does seem weird for a big jump like that, esp with such low case temps. i blame summer :D
 
Ahh ;) a bit better..

I lapped my heatsink and re-applied AS5, now it's idling at a steady 48 degrees, load at 52 and ambient at 27-28 degrees. :D I still blame the darn heat :p
 
I tried lapping my heatsink once. It wasn't a solid copper base though, only the disc in the middle.

Long story short, my new CPU runs great.

Just a reminder for your temps. The Silent Boost verson of the V12 is a LOW rpm and CFM fan. Try putting a big orange or a 92mm med speed fan with a ring addapter. And them temps look about right for that HSF.

Very easy. You will just need a screw driver. And the following links are fans I would use.
If you are willing to use a speed controller I suggest this one.

Ahhh.. I am an idiot.. nothing else to it :p Turns out I had the heatsink on backwards :mad: Now it's running fine at about 45 degrees idle. That's much better than a steady 52. *One more slap for myself*
 
No, no damage to either.. luckily all that happened was the HS base only touched down on 2/3's of the core, just enough to still draw away some heat. Everything seems to be running nicely now, so I am much more pleased than before ;)

Yeah, I couldn't understand for the life of me why my setup was running at 52 degrees constantly, and couldn't even reach sub 50 temps. Now with a new lapping, reapplication of AS5 and the "proper" mounting of my HSF, the temps look more like what they should. I've got it lightly oc'd at 2.0GHz running a decent 46 degrees idle, 48-49 load. :eek:
