Rubber Washers?

So I just went to lows and bought some rubber washers that measure 5/32x1/2x1/16. Is it okay to put these between the motherboard and the retention screws of the dark knight? I don't see why this would be a problem I'm just making sure.

I am doing this to rule out the screws shorting anything on the motherboard because last time I tried booting up my Q9550, dfi x38, dark knight one of the tracers around the bottom left cpu mounting hole fried. I am just doing this as a precaution.

No, it won't harm anything if you use those washers. You'll be fine. I don't think it's a particularly common practice though, since I can't recall seeing anyone else doing the same thing.
 
Doesn't the metal of the retention bracket for your S1283 come awfully close to the traces around the cpu mounting holes on your P5Q?
 
I have the S1283 with the X bracket, and the metal does come very close to the printed circuit traces. This is on a P5Q pro. I centered the bracket very carefully, and I installed the cooler slowly.

Washers are a good idea for this bracket, IMO.
 
I never thought of using washers for the HS bracket. I did use plastic washers between my MB and standoffs on my Dragonslayer system when I first built it about 5 years ago though. I decided not to bother this time when I moved my Dragonslayer system to a Silverstone FT01 case last week. The Lian-Li still has the plastic washers on the standoffs, so I guess the new MB will be installed like this again. Once it's in the case, I'll update my sig.:)
 
I'm sure you are already aware of this, but if you use Arctic Silver 5, make sure you don't get any on the mainboard traces around the CPU area, as it is conductive.

I used MASSCOOL Shin-Etsu on my E8500. It is a non-conductive thermal paste. It seems to work well, but you only get a tiny amount in a syrince. I bought 2, and I used the second one to fill in the gaps at the contact base, bet. the heat pipes on the cooler.

Good luck w/ your new build. Hopefully everything will work right the first time you power it up.
