Rofl! 50 fps difference.

I love my new 6800 GT, but we really shouldn't get pleasure out of seeing ATI get stomped. It's been said before that competition is a good thing for us consumers. I seriously doubt that if ATI had never came out with the 9700 Pro, and put a butt whoopin' on nVidia that we would be playing at the levels we are today.

at over a hundred fps does it really matter ?

IMO what is more important is the minimums, and which card provides the highest sustainable framerate

also remember the demo playback function does not playback AI

People are going to look for pleasure out of the card investment they bought. That should be had by enjoying games. However... we all know how the internet is...

Having said that... ever visit rage3d? Farcry is typed between every other word..

Yes, I have an account over there, but haven't been to the site in a while. They like Far Cry huh?

wasn't it already acknowledged that doom 3 ran better on nvidia because nvidia had better openGL performance? wasn't it also already understood that nvidia always domianted the raw power benchmarks? and wasn't nvidia the underdog in the last round?

i'm not being a fanboy. i'm just making sure that nothing new is being said here.

Excellent point.

In the Hardocp benchmarks the minimum is where the 6800s really shined...

in "eye candy" mode there's a 6fps difference.

However if you're playing online and want to give yourself the best chance possible then you'll want a 6800, no doubt. That's terrible for ati in terms of Doom3's online play, not single player, however.

Color me very confused.
How are these high FPS being achieved?

Why is no one else asking this? Everyone is just commenting on it matter-of-factly.

NVidia should get much higher highs in Doom3 from the way I understand it. The game engine itself assumes a lot of things about the textures, that the ATi card does not. ATi never assumes there will be a completely black shadow anywhere for instance. (So Nvidia is much faster in many shadow/shading instances) ATi also does not have per pipeline fog effects to my knowledge (ATi's always been a little skimpy on fog/haze hardware, which is perfectly fine IMO) I mean, if you know that a game will have 3 different and 10x more fog effects than a "regular" game, you can attach a fog engine at the end of each pipeline, instead of just having one generic one in the main processing stage and have all fog effects run 16x faster (on a 16 pipe card)

BTW, I hate fog. ATi uses many different alpha effects to achieve different fog effects, Carmack seems to have completely omitted alpha (and just doubled red against blue and green) which means anything hardcoded on ATi for alpha related speedups just never gets used unless there is a way to shoehorn it back in. Depth of field fog has be notoriously used to cover up integer based precision limitiations of hardware. IE, Common practice when a mountain will suddenly just "pop" into view when you reach a certain area, is just cover it up with fog < Gah.

I was kind of interested to see what sort of XYZ precision differences might visually crop up at different floating point levels, but Doom3 has so many clausterphobic and right angled textures close up (IE, its like playing in a closet) that I never really got any real sense of depth beyond 50 feet. Honestly, I think many areas could have been made with DX7 integers and Red textures and noone would be able to tell the difference.

ARB2 path mean anything to you? ATI can support stencil shadows just as well as anyone can. That's not proprietary.

http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/doom3_perf/default.asp

"The most startling part about it is that NVIDIA’s ace in the hole, UltraShadow, isn’t even enabled currently in DOOM 3. With the extensive use of stencil shadows throughout DOOM 3’s dark levels, UltraShadow could play a huge role in improving NVIDIA’s current performance even more."

hope you're still "rofl" when the HL2 benches come out...

Why do you say that? Because Nvidias D3D sucks as hard as ATi's OpenGl? I think not, 16.3 fps difference in avg fps in favor of Nvidia when it comes to OpenGL. Somewhat ROFL, but no biggie. 4 fps difference in min fps and 1.2 in favor of ATi when it comes to Direct3D. Not something that would bother me at all. Those #'s are from CoH and FarCry.

its a custom timedemo with all features turned off I am assuming....

they call it pure speed setup but dont identify what they do to get it..

so the article blows imo

why the HELL does everyone think ATI is going to dominate HL2.......heres a newsflash IT WONT!! ati will most likely be ahead since its dx9 but its not going to be the utter helpless rape like doom3 was....im willing to bet money that once the official HL2 benchmarks come out that ATIs lead is only by 10fps SOME of the time and averages a 5fps lead.......and even so theres NO way the x800pro will ever compare to the GT due to pipes....so unless your looking at the reclusive x800xt and 6800ultra nvidia might actually win......

Wow....another real winner thread that I sifted through for useful information only to waste my time.

You can always add an effect ontop of a rendering path. I'm also pretty sure that the game engine does not fare well with using time tested hardware standard AA (which would explain why its so slow on both NVidia and ATi)

Nvidia was touting their lighting effects as being able to be "area based" which would greatly reduce computational overhead. ATi's lights are just like normal lights, that meaning they will fade in intensity with distance, but are are always "infinite" in distance. I don't know what Carmacks engine uses, but there is a possiblity that he used those lights.

Its like the entire NV30/40 architecture was designed to be played in small, multiple light source rooms with multiple overlapping shadows.

What I'd like to see someday is a curved horizon, so that when you approach objects far away (like thousands of feet), they slowly rise out of the ground instead of just enlarge. It would finally get rid of pixel-popping and the need to cover it up with fog.

XBitlabs pure speed mode means no AA/AF. Simple as that.

And those frames are pretty much in-line with [in the very least] my own experiances.

So yes, do refrain from gracing us with your input.

Yeah I hate this article...the one by [H] showing the XTPE barely beating a 6800nu was much better imo.

why not? I do..... :D

seriously, I like this more than usual recent outbreak of ATi vs. nVidia pissing contests.

it makes for great entertainment when one is really bored. :p

I can garuntee you that there won't be a 50FPS difference, unless ATi is cheating, that's for sure.

Lets be clear about one thing. I don't care who gets 160 fps versus 110 fps in 1024x728 with no eye candy on. I don't have a 17" CRT... I'm playing D3 at 1600x1200 on my 2001FP with my X800 pro on the second highest video setting and it plays excellently. If you're telling me that the GT gets more fps that i couldn't tell the difference from, then who the fuck cares? I'm just glad I'm not one of the dozen or so posters on the front page with problems with their GT and D3 concerning artifacts, snow, and especially that half the peopel here aren't egtting anywhere near the fps shown in some of these "reviews"... or have you missed all those threads? And as far as "cheating", do you have even a clue what you're talking about. If someone "cheats" and it makes my gameplay even more enjoyable and there no noticable negatives, then I say let them all cheat!

Sniff, sniff...this game that hasn't come out yet is going to run more better faster on the next card from my fan-boi company than your fan-boi company. That makes you all POOPIEHEADS!!!!!1!
