Rip DVD to standard movie format

I need to take 20 DVD movies (marketing material; no commerical movies) and rip them into a format that a standard WinXP/2k machine can play. No weird plugins/codecs please. What's the best way to do this? I don't need to copy the DVDs, just rip them to movie format that Window Media Player can play without codecs.
