I noticed several notebook models have these screens now. They come at a premium but are far superior to the standard panel fare on most notebooks.

I was wondering if anyone knew if this is comparable to the coming oled panels? Or will the oled quality completely outstrip the RGBLED in terms of clarity and/or cost.

Which will have the better contrast, which would be better able to showcase high dynamic range images etc.

Also, as a side note, how much better would one of these displays be compared to the H-IPS panels? Are there any rgb ips panels on the market?

Completely different from OLED panels.

RGBLED is currently use in Sony's XBR8 series of HDTVs. LED backlight hit the PC monitor / HDTV scene not too long ago and uses white LEDs instead of Cold Compact Florescent Lights. RGBLEDs create white light by combining the three primary colors Red, Green, Blue. These are the same colors used to create color in CRT monitors.

Since each of the RGB colors can be controlled separately, the backlight should technically create purer whites and probably control brightness intensity that varies across the screen (but this is expensive to implement). This should make colors look brighter and can help with color accuracy if implemented properly. However, this is basically backlighting, it is the panel itself that has the greatest impact on color accuracy.

RGBLED is merely an evolutionary step for LCD monitors and HDTVs. OLED is considered revolutionary compared to LCD and backlight tech.

RGBLED seems to consume relatively large amounts of energy compared to "vanilla LED" backlighting based on the power consumption of Sony's XBR8 HDTVs. It is an indirect conclusion.

Most current CCFL back-lit displays now use WCG-CCFL, which almost completely covers the NTSC color gamut, whereas for better or worse, white-LED and RGB-LED exceed the color gamut.

And based on Cnet's Sony XBR8 and Samsung A950 HDTV power consumption numbers, it appears that RGB-LED uses only slightly more energy than white LED, and even WCG-CCFL. Although, the RGB-LED XBR8 also employs more zones: 128 vs. the white-LED A950 with just 96.

calibrated power consumption
B750 (WCG-CCFL) .11 (watts/sq. inch)
A950 (white-LED) .11 (watts/sq. inch)
XBR8 (RGB-LED) .15 (watts/sq. inch)

And while an LED LCD with 1:1 total pixel coverage (2M) would consume many times more power, due to sheer size of current individual LEDs, this is an impossibility. Edge-lit LED LCD use even less power, only because they use less LED with a combination of more sophisticated diffusers.

OLED has the potential to blow all three away, including IPS RGB-LED. Can't wait.
