understanding that widescreens have different resolutions i'm just curious as to how you can compare these with "normal" resolutions. like does the 2005fpw have a resolution that is comparable to 1280x1024 etc?

All LCD’s have a “native” resolution which is where they perform (or should) at their very best.

Beyond that you get into “scaling” which is the units ability to display non-native resolutions.

Better LCD’s should be able to give good, or acceptable output at their non-native resolutions. Of course, some monitors are far more capable of this then others.

Your monitor should be able to display any standard setting and probably many non-standard settings; it’s just a matter of how well it does that and how acceptable you find the results.
