As you all know, Western digital has been making two versions of its drives for some times now. However, other manufacturers haven't started doing this, or even mentioning that their drives deal with the TLER scenario. Thus, I want to make ab-so-tively sure that I can in good conscience recommend disks other than the WD RE drives for raid arrays. So here's where I'd like some help. I would like to email the big 5 manufacturers (minus WD) and ask them what drives support TLER-ish features. The other half of the picture would be to email 3ware and Areca and so forth about what drives actually work in TLER scenarios, but I don't think we need to go that far... yet.
  • Seagate: NL35 series has TLER (p. 11, they call it error recovery control), 7200.9 series does not appear to (p. 9), 7200.8 series undetermined.
  • Maxtor:
    I'm sorry but Maxtor does not support the RAID setup. The drives are compatible with most RAID setups, though, just as they are compatible with multiple operating systems. You would have to contact the RAID card manufacturer or the operating system manufacturer if you are using an operating system to set up RAID.

  • Hitachi: 7K series supports TLER, or doesn't have a WD-like problem.
  • Samsung: P80 series unknown. T133 series unknown.
  • Western Digital: RE series has TLER; SE series does not.
I'd appreciate any help you would care to lend in determining the status of these drives. This post will be updated as results are found. Thanks! :cool:

 
I have a bunch of Samsung P80 drives on a Promise SX-4 controller. I have yet to see a dropped drive that was not broken in the 1.25 years that I have been running the setup. However, I have had some different error events logged without having to perform a rebuild:

example 2 would be something about re-initializing a channel. The problem is that I lost my error log during my OS drive crash, so I cannot tell you what it really said. :(
 
Off topic - blue on grey text is farking impossible to read without selecting the text. Would you mind changing the color?
 
Emails sent to Areca, 3ware, Hitachi and Samsung. Color changed to something more readable.

 
Email recieved from Hitachi:
The Hitachi GST drives do not have the same problem as Western Digital
drives. We actually have not seen any issues with our drives being dropped
from raid arrays.

Note lack of Engrish. A reassuring feeling compared to the emails from Seagate and Maxtor...

 
*Still* haven't received email from Samsung. I'm disappointed.

I also updated my inquiry at Maxtor to see if they could be a little more specific; here's what I got:
The drives are standard SATA drives. If you select the RAID to recover from errors it will recover until it is complete.

Sounds to me like they misunderstood the question. It sounds like they're talking about losing a drive from a raid 5 array and rebuilding the array.
