Replacing PSU fan

I've got my 5 year old OCZ ZX-1250 and it's been great to me all these years but I've noticed a slight noise coming from my computer for the past week or so.

After exhaustively checking every fan and moving part, I determined it was the PSU fan.

I don't feel like buying a new PSU just for the fan and the noise is not overbearing but noticeable for me to hear it. Would it be wise to just replace the fan myself, there's no more warranty on the PSU anyways. Anybody done this before?

Sure, it's easy to swap the fan out on the psu. Just be sure it's the same size and wire it up just like the original. I've done it hundreds of times.

easy like Nebulous said! should be this one:

Yep, done it several times too, it's easy. Just get a good phan with the same or better specs, diameter and thickness should be the same. Dust philter, LED lights, sound dampening, lots of options.

Thanks all, I ordered a noctua 140mm fan as a replacement. Gonna do it over the weekend.

I just wanted you to know that your use of ph instead of f in fan and filter made me twitch while reading this thread.

You should be fine. I too have replaced dozens. Even added a fan controller to slow the thing down. Is it plugged in or will you need to solder it out?

Double check the wire won't get into the blades - remember it's going to be upside down. If you have any doubts let us know, PSUs are serious business.

Ugh, I still have yet to actually replace my PSU fan. It's been cold enough that the PSU fan doesn't even turn on most the time and when it does turn on, the noise is barely there. I might just return the fan.

Why return the fan? You have it. You pretty much know the PSU fan is kaput. When the weather warms up it's just going to get noisy again. Just replace the damn thing! :D

Because there are capacitors in there, I would recommend you power off the PSU then press and hold the power button on the case to disperse the remaining power. After you pull it out, still let it sit for a few minutes just to be safe.

im with redwagnum you should replace it if its making noise at some point it will stop then you could have problems.
