I have a Zalman CNPS7000B-AlCu LED (because the LED model was cheaper) connected to its supplied FanMate unit. The reoccuring problem I have is that the "high" setting on the FanMate will seemingly randomly and without any apparent reason suddenly become very deprived of power, and the LED in the fan goes out and it spins very slowly; slower than turning the knob on the FanMate to its lowest speed.

When this happens I usually notice it because my CPU temps spike by about 5°C, and I immediately turn the knob to the "low" position and the fan proceeds to speed up a bit. I then restart the computer after closing any important programs and saving stuff. Rebooting always fixes it.

However, today this has happened twice in a row, causing two lockups moments after restart. I currently have the fan running in the "low" position, with MBM reporting 1339 RPM.

This problem usually tended to happen if I left my computer on for extended periods, but I don't understand why it happens at all. Everything appears to be installed correctly, and I have been using this computer, with no hardware modifications whatsoever, for over a year. I don't remember when it started happening.

Can you run without the fanmate? It seems that, somewhere, a component got damaged or something... Either in the fanmate or the fan it's self. What's the fanmate plugged into? A regular molex?

Actually I can't figure out why I ever plugged in the FanMate at all. I just plugged the CPU fan in directly to the motherboard; the nature of the failures led me to believe that the FanMate is malfunctioning. I'm silly.
