Renaming lots of documents

Forgive me for my noobiness but is there a way or a program that can rename hundreds of documents in a folder so they go "##name## 1, ##name## 2, ##name## 3, ##name## 4, etc,etc. Help much appreciated.

in Windows you can select all and choose rename. Enter the name for the first file and then each subsequent file will have the same name followed by a number in brackets. There's not a lot of options as to the numbering scheme, but it might do the job

1-4a Rename has worked well for me for renaming files by pattern. Nothing especially great about it, it's just one of the first ones I found that did what I needed. It does what I need, so I have no reason to look elsewhere.
