Removing IHS?

I've been considering removing the IHS on my 2.8C and was wondering how to go about doing it, whats the easiest way (yeah i know there isn't an EASY way) and after its off, do i use shims on the proc (like AMDs) to prevent the heatsink from cracking it? since when putting my heatsink on it takes A LOT of downward force to engage the clips and i dont need a $170 keychain.

not worth it

only get 1C-2C

voids your warentee

good chance of fucking your cpu

i had a 2.0A and turned itno a keychain like that

not a bad looking key chain for $140

dont do it

heh....i know it is a pain to do, i was just wondering from people that have successfully done it if it was worth it. like hardwired for example has the same HS as i do and his load temps are like 20C below mine, and i got a &*#$ tornado on it!

IC7s are known to give messed up temperatures.

Some site put an IC7 up against an Asus board and kept everythign IDENTICAL except for the motherboard. The abit chip reported temperatures 10C higher than the Asus did. I wouldnt be worried about it if i were you, as long as your stable.

safer to:

lap ihs
lap hsf
better case fans
push all of the wires out of the way so you get better flow

stuff like that

Well, ive got decent case fans...2 intake, a blowhole and exhaust plus my CPU fan draws outside air. How would i go about lapping my IHS without toasting my processor, as im almost sure that my IHS is concave and I WANT to lap it, just couldnt find any decent guides on what to do and what precautions to take so as i said earlier i dont have a pricey keychain. But if anyone has info on how to lap the IHS it would be greatly appreciated.

oh forgot, wiring isnt a prob either as most of it is routed behind my MB thru the right side of the case. Its relatively clean inside my case.

A lot of the more recent P4s have the IHS epoxied on..

yikes

well if you wana lap the ihs

1 take out cpu...duh;)

2 get your sand paper out [400grt, 600, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500] what i use

3 get a black sharpie out and color the whole top of the ihs

4 get some foam or some thing similar to put on the pins to protect them from bending

5 get a paper towel and wet the whole thing but make sure its not driping wet

6 wipe the table clean and do dry it up just use you r hand to get most of the water off

7place the sand paper on the slightly wet table, it should help stick, then dab all of the sand paper top with the towel.

8 dab the cpu with the towel

9 start going back and forth slowly in one direction for 30 passes then look at the ihs and see if it is warped, if it is you may need more than 1 sheet of 400grt.

10 i decide to change papers when my towel gets really dirty

11 continue using the 400grt. until the ihs is flat then move on to the finer paper.

12 when i lap a ihs i leave the cpu out on a vent with the pins down for atleast a day. since waiting a day imo is worth the $170 to buy a new cpu.

i hope it helps

that is just what i do when i am lapping any thing

good luck

thanx for the help bro... when doing that did you use distilled water (isnt that non-conductive, or at least reduced?)? and i just lapped my heatsink, seems to have dropped the temps about 3-4C and the AS5 hasnt even cured yet!! :D
