Remove plastic shroud from 6850

I just acquired a Radeon HD 6850 video card and I noticed it extends over my SATA ports. I looked inside the plastic shroud and the whole area that's covering the SATA ports is empty. Is it OK to remove the black plastic casing around the card? Will it affect cooling? Would it void my warranty?

Alternatively I could remove a small chunk of the shroud with my Dremel but I'm pretty sure that will void the warranty. :)
 
If it's like the reference 5xxx series, the purpose of the plastic shroud is to control the flow of air; it's not just a decorative thing. It's why the egg-shaped Juniper cooler has a slight performance difference from the first one.

I wouldn't advise removing the shroud, as such; the cooler is designed with the expectation that there's a shroud containing the airflow.
 
I'm also assuming a reference design.

I would first go with elbow sata connectors if they fit, and worst case cutting out their profile in the plastic shroud. Without any guidance to direct the airflow, the fan won't be effective.

Or buy an aftermarket cooler which will dump the hot air inside your case, that is an option too, not one I'd suggest though depending.
 
Removing the shroud won't void your warranty but cutting will =P, If the card is a reference design "blows out the back of the case" Then you cant really remove the shroud because most like the card will overheat. The best bet is what Yakk said and get 90 degree Sata cords. If not a new board with a better design is always a option, rather then hacking up your 200 dollar card
