remote setup of linux crashplan?

Anyone out there successfully set up a remote machine running linux with crashplan, from a windows client? I've need to get it running on a remote Centos 6 box, from some win7 or 2008R2 windows machines. I'm having no luck, the client just hangs after the login.

It is making a connection, because I can double-click on the crashplan icon in that window and bring up a CLI window. From there I can issue commands and get results. So "something" is working. The logs show no clear error.

Crashplan support is lame. The first crack at their response was to tell me to use backup to SMB shares. WTF? That won't even address the simple "can't login" problem. At the same time they said it was an unsupported config, even though their own website explains the steps to do it!

So, anyone gotten this sort of thing to work?
 
Were you on the same subnet or was it across the internet? I'm attempting the latter.

I followed those steps, no luck. I've also tried reconfiguring the local ui.properties file with the remote machine's IP. Similarly, no luck.
 
Same subnet, but i dont think it matters as the tunnel should work through a firewall on the other end?

One thing that threw me off is you need to click "ADD" on the PUTTY tunnel config or it WONT save it even though it looks like it did.
 
I'm guessing there's "something else" necessary, port or protocol-wise. Because, as I posted, I'm getting a connection that the CLI can use, but the full UI doesn't succeed in logging in. I've tried connected through a different ISP and met with the same lack of success.
