Reliable storages

I purchased 2 WD Passport drives, 2TB each for storing vital data of my 6 year old PC.Because I don't know how much long will my old internal storages last.

How much reliable are these drives for storage?. Yes WD has 3-5 year warranty. But no manufacturer provides warranty on data, they only provide hardware warranty.

I have not seen any scientific data on this. I mean no one with a thousand or more drives has said anything about reliability. Remember statistically a user with a small handful of drives can not really say anything about their experience as much a pooling 5 people for a presidential election can say who will win. As a result I would assume these drives fall in the expected 2% to 10% annual failure rate category that most consumer drives occupy.

If you are worried about your data you make backups. Preferably more than 1 backup on different media and store these backups in different locations.

The reason I decided to back up data into pair of external passport drive is, because I am not sure, when I will upgrade my rig. But I FEAR, when these 6 year old drive might die or suddenly stop working.

Any drive can die at any time at all regardless of its age or how much you use it. Although after around 5 years the chance of failure starts to increase again.
