If I don't want stuff with all that bundle software is it ok to buy refurbrished products? I don't quite understand newegg's refurbrish policy... is it if it doesn't work you get an exchange before 15 days?
 
I would get everything refurb except for LCD's and HardDrives.
 
i've bought a few things refurbished with no problems. like said above, i'd agree with getting almost anything that way except hard drives...
losing my files = chaos... anything else can be replaced with just the loss of a few more bucks, the data lost wont be coming back.

Right, and if it fails after 15 days, you still have the manufacturer's warranty - however long that is.

If you are wanting to save money by getting stuff without software and fancing packing look at oem stuffs as thats what it is by definition.

-i think I want to get a video card, crt monitor, a dvd burner, and maybe a mobo from new egg

Depends on the timing

Before 15 days - RMA through NewEgg
After 15 days - RMA through manufacturer

I don't know what NewEggs return policy is, but refurb or not after XX days or so its alway should go through the manufacturer refurb or not. (Probably 30 days or something)

Weigh the price savings against the aggrivation that it might not work. I prefer to just get OEM - which is always new, just no box or software.
 
Stay away from refurb displays, HDDs and RAM. Anything else is good to go.

CRTs=expensive to ship if bad and prone odd issues that make it look functional but not 100%. IE can't adjust the screen area correctly or something like that.

LCDs=touchy in the first place.

HDD=bad news if they do fail, my precious data!

RAM= easy to break but seem working (random errors), difficult to TS. Fourtunatly you could memtest86 any RAM, so if you do buy RAM test the shit out of it within the retailers RMA period.

I agree, though I've never bought and LCD yet.

But never a refurbed HD. Especially if if says IBM or Hitachi:p
 
Newegg is about 20-30 minutes away from me so its not a problem to bring broken stuff back

are vid cards ok to buy refurb?
 
Sure just be aware cables/manuals may not be included. That can be important with the DVI-VGA converter which costs a little bit by itself.
 
I get refurbed stuff as long as it comes with a manufacturer warrenty, so that if something does fail, its covered.
 
i bought a refurbed 9600pro from newegg, needed some grease in the fan, works great.

i bought a refurbished hard drive (AAAH!!!!)

it was a recent model that just came out like 3 weeks earlier. and it was 160 gigs with fluidic bearing tech [hitachi drive with ibm chips i shit you not] $100& 3 year warrenty.

i took a guess and assumed that someone couldnt get past the 127gig limit for win98, me, or win2k. i looked at it and it was formatted with a 127 gig partition. (now i know why it was refurbished, the drive wasnt broke)

so i opened up all the gigs on it and ran several disk health utilities, and everything was spiffy. so i used it. its lasted 6 months so far.

dont buy refurbished hard drives (do as i say, not as i do :) )

refurbished LCDs are usually refurbished due to dead pixels. decide if a few dead pixels are worth the cost to you.
 
I would be wary of buying refurbed LCD's and hard drives. Don't think I'd be afraid of refurbed mobo's/video cards/sound cards, as issues with those are easy to diagnose and you can always return if they don't work.

The only refurbed item I've ever bought though was a Dell CRT, because it was simply too good of a deal to pass up --I'm not sure if anyone still here was around the hardforum back when that deal happened (this is where everyone found out about it). They had refurbed 21" flat CRT trinitrons on sale for about 300$ CDN --and this was when a nice 19" flat CRT trinitron sold for 700-800$ CDN.

My CRT is still going strong today (though I'm going to replace it with an LCD). It's what I'm looking at as I write this, in fact :). Mine was refurbed due to a crack on the front plastic of the monitor, which I covered up with a motherboard sticker ;).
 
No, could have been returned for lots of reason. Found a better prices, didn't like the performance, whatever.
