I'm putting together a new computer for my SO who is a graphic designer. She would be a wreck if she lost her work so I'm trying to determine what the best setup is for data redundancy.

Originally I just planned to use three drives, one SSD and two Hitachi Deskstar drives which would be using on board RAID1. From there I'd probably have her archive her stuff to optical once she was no longer working on it.

Now I'm pretty unfamiliar with redundancy and backup scenarios and solutions, so I'm likely way off with what I was planning. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

What I'd do personally is run the OS/Applications off of an SSD. This will give you a responsive environment to work in.

If it's vital that she have access to her work at all times, then RAID1 would be a good plan. Obviously backing up off-site on top of this would be ideal as well.

If she can deal with some downtime, then backups alone would suffice.
