recommended vs maxium resolution LCD

i thought that even though there is a recommended resolution...that games can still be played at lower resolutions... just because the monitor im lookign at is a 16x12 recommended, but wanna be able to play games when my hardware starts to become lacking
question is basically.. can i play newer games at lower than max res.
