I need a recommendation on the best possible card I can get without it getting bottlenecked by my RAM and CPU.

Specs
CPU: Intel QX6700 @ stock 2.7 GHz
RAM: 4GB Corsair Dominator DDR2 800
GPU: Geforce 9800 GTX+ OC 1GB
Mobo: Asus Striker Extreme
PSU: Antec True Power Quattro 1000W

Any input would be appreciated.

I would say GTX 460 1/2 gb or SLi of those. Playing games at 19x12 or 1080p (19x10)I have the same proc and it's overclocked to 3.4. I would suggest overclocking on the CPU or it's going to be hard not to get a bottleneck.

Not sure if the 6000 series is bringing anything new with less chances of bottlenecking ,chances are the opposite will happen.

Def go the GTX 460 route. It is the best bang for the buck card out there. Just make sure you grab the 1GB version though.

460 is a kickass card. Not sure if the 2GB models make any difference over the 1GB, I believe it's just marketing.

The 1GB definitely makes a difference over the 768MB, because the memory bus is 256-bit instead of 192-bit and there are 4/3rd ROPs (or something else, I forget). Afaik, the 2gb is a non-reference design and has the same memory architecture as the 1gb, just larger capacity, no additional bandwidth, but I could certainly be wrong.

1gb version is best bet, unless you can find the 2gb version with rebate for around the same price as the 1gb as was the case a few weeks ago.

Thanks for the responses, fellas. I looked on Newegg and see a lot of the 460's for around $230-$250 which isn't bad since this will be a Christmas gift.

So would I definitely have to overclock my CPU? Would 3.0 Ghz be enough or would I have to push it to 3.2 and above?

Look a bit harder... should be seeing them for $210-220.

If this is a Christmas gift and you don't need the card at this EXACT moment then wait a month for ATI's new cards.

If your going to wait a little that should work in your favor for 2 main reasons. AMD's 6000 series is coming out and they may have something worthwhile. and 2 once those cards are available it's expected that GTX 460 prices should come down quite a bit. So if you still choose to go that route those $250 models may be available for $199.99 or less.

Definitely wait and see what the ATI 6000 cards will look like before you buy anything right now. But since you are waiting, you should see a nice drop in price on the GTX 460 1GB.

This. Decide what you want to get a day before you buy it, not a month or two... The landscape changes everyday.

The 680i sucks for overclocking quads but I believe the main issue in that regard is not being able to achieve any sort of high FSB.

With your QX6700, you should have a multiplier-unlocked chip, so you should be able to overclock it by adjusting the multiplier instead and essentially bypass the limitations of the 680i.

I know. I overclock it to 3.2 GHz but sometimes it's unstable, so I'll have to fiddle around with the settings a little more once I get the new card.

i wouldnt get anything more than a 460 for that old system

Kind of true, but there won't be any bottlenecking if his quad is at 3.4GHZ or possibly 3.6GHZ if confirming the op finds his way around getting 3.2 stable on those designed flawed 680i mobo's. I mean there are some people with still with 4GHZ+ dual cores running with GTX460 SLi 'd.

Wait for AMD's HD6xxx, they will drive the prices of everything else in the market down.

Sorry for the bump but I managed to achieve a stable 3.2 GHz for my system. I'm doing Christmas shopping in about 2 weeks, so the GTX 460 would definitely suit me, right?

you need a bigger power supply. :D

I seriously hope you did not think that a 1000 watt psu was needed for your system. anyway a gtx460 would be good for you. even a 768mb model would be okay if you are at 1680 or below.

Hey guys, sorry for the bump, but I have another question. I got a MSI GTX 460 Cyclone 1GB in January and it definitely handles games better than my 9800GTX+ ever did. My question is, can I add another one, or would that be too much for my CPU?

at 1680 I would not bother with another gtx460. it would help in most cases but you certainly would not fully utilize another gtx460 at that res with your cpu.

Buy an h50, h60, h70 or h100 and overclock the snot out of your cpu. Then we'll talk about upgrading you graphics more. Oh, and get a better screen, too.
