Bought some ram from a seller in Canada, he shipped it and I received it about a week and a half later. This is the state it came in. The seller was cooperative and a full refund is "Pending" through to my Paypal.

My question is, since this ram is completely trashed, am I obligated to even return it? Seems kind of pointless, but if I have to, am I the one paying for the return shipping? The seller has been honest thus far and cooperative.

That's eWaste, plain and simple. I wouldn't return that, it's not worth the shipping costs. Just looking at it, I can confidently say that it is no longer computer parts but rather refuse for the rubbish bin...

It is up to the seller to tell you to return it. You have to pay to return shipping cost if he chooses to have it shipped back. So you pay shipping (your cost) and then get the refund you paid for the ram. You do not get covered to send the item back if he asked for it. But maybe he will not ask for it back.

This ^

but if he's a good seller and wants it back he'd cover it.

Seems to me that if it was packaged properly this wouldn't have happened so the seller pays for return shipping

What did he do wrap some tape around it and ship it in a No. 9 envelope?

I'd just email him and ask if he wanted it back as you were just going to toss it. See what he says first.

If he wants it back he's just being an ahole then as he knows how he shipped it.

If he wants it back, he should be paying for the shipping as it was not your mistake for the poor state it arrived in.

Those photo's clearly show improper shipping packing to me

It was packed about as well as someone could pack it when trying to put ram in an envelope. He put them in an anti-static bag, lined them up, taped the ends and center, sandwiched it between 2 pieces of cardboard, stapled it and put it in an envelope.

For putting it in an envelope it was packaged well - but it was still an envelope. And it had to come from Canada to the USA so it switched carrier hands on the way

Newegg did this to me once. I mean they put ram in a padded envelope. Good thing the ram survived the amount it was bent and I was able to bend it back. I thoroughly tested it and after passing I installed it in a customers pc.

The problem is he lined them up instead of stacking which would have added strength. Of course he used an envelope which was his first mistake and why he lined them up. Cardboard bends which is why they ship in a stiff plastic shrink wrap case most times.

Skimping on packaging is one of the worst thing an (honest) seller can do.

The way the cardboard is in that picture, basically gave the RAM almost 0 protection from bending.

The cardboard grain should have been at a 90 degree angle from the RAM. That right there would have given it much more protection.

A couple layers like that and it probably would have made it ok.

Still, RAM + envelope = fail unless packaged really, really well.

And I am very particular about how I package stuff when I sell.

Edit: I was ninja posted..

Definitely go for your $$$ back.

Even though it looks like a moose sat on the package, the seller should know better with such flimsy packaging.

I ship ram in envelopes all the time, but I also know and assume the risk. I agree, typically if you stack it you are ok. Simple cardboard won't cut it in a case like this.

I use bubble mailers for ram with carboard. never seen this happen i would say that envelope is only ok for a single stick of laptop ram. Just return in in envelope.

also like cyclone said canada small flat rate would probably be around $12

If I don't have the plastic memory case I will use bubble wrap envelope with two pieces of cardboard(in antistatic bag) or send in a priority mail small box.

I received ram that looked similar to that from newegg. They had shipped it USPS in a padded envelope. It was for a customer/friend and I did not want an additional delay. I straightened the dimms out tested them thoroughly and they worked and still work 3+ years later.

$0.58 at Home Depot.

1-13/16 in. x 5 in. Tie Plate. 20 gauge steel.

Confused, are you saying someone sent you that as ram, or is that what you used to ensure the ram doesnt get bent. Any static issues either with metal contact? (im guessing you would put em in a anti-static bag first)

Metal is a good conductor, so it would be fine as long as it's not shorting any conductors on the ram when you touch it. If I did use that, I'd get a few nuts/bolts and some spacers and put the ram in-between two (in an anti-stat bag) with tape to prevent it from falling out.

Depending on the value of the ram, I think it'd be worth the $3 or so of protection (considering a plastic container made for the same purpose would cost as much, or more).

Edit: To be clear, the ram would be inside a bag, and the two plates separated by spacers and held together with bolts would be outside the bag. ;)

Why does the buyer have to pay for return shipping when it's clearly the seller fault?

If you order an TV/monitor/etc.. online and it got damage in transit, would you think it's fair for the buyer to pay for return shipping?

The seller should be responsible for return shipping, period.

Are you arguing about what the right thing to do is or what paypal is going to say?

If the sellers not a dick you are correct. However if the seller wants to be a dick then usually paypal would leave returning the item up to you.

I've used cardboard to splint ram in a bubble envelope and never had a problem.
Even in a regular envelope, well, I think I gotta say I'm surprised it did that much damage.
Lesson learned for sure.
Thanks for posting OP.

Whatever did that would have laughed at a flat rate box as well. I've sent several sticks of ram in padded envelopes. Wrap it in the pink bubble wrap and then put the rolled up bubble wrap in a bubble envelope. You could kick a field goal with it no problem. Anything with enough crushing force to do what happened in that pic doesn't care about your box.
