what would be the recommended raid configuration for the following system

windows server 2003
SAP solutions accounting software
MS SQL 2005

10+ users constant
10 more casually

requires system and data partitions

both is nice but fault tolerance is critical over performance

the old server has 2 raid-5s
im thinking about dipping into 0 + 1
perhaps 4 80GBs for the system, and 4 500GBs for the data

but i would like some input

*Looking back at what you mentioned, Server being for SQL*

Either setup should be fine. Especially for the amount of users your working with.

0+1 would definitely perform alot better than Raid 5.

But I don't find a need to run 0+1 on the system drive. Raid 1 would fit the bill.

Just run 0+1 or Raid 5 on the data drive.

if your controller supports it do 1 + 0 not 0 + 1, it's slightly better redundancy.

With only 20 users even raid 5 would perform fine. Keep the OS partition on a separate drive.

I normally do

RAID 1 = OS
RAID 5 = Data Files
RAID 1 = Logs

But on my large SQL server (400 users and 2000 slot machines)

RAID 10 (4 Drives) = OS
RAID 10 (24 Drives) = Data
RAID 10 (4 Drives) = Logs
RAID 10 (4 Drives) = TempDB

More spindles = faster. But 10-20 users isn't much.

wow, thanks for the input :)

im not 100% up on my sql, im still learning some. but what would be the benefit for having the log files on its own spindle?

im still do not entirely know the importance of the log file, but thats something for me to research myself.

The above suggestions are good, but remember with only 10-20 users a simple RAID 5 array is fine, no need to over complicate it!

Well, unless your storing DVD ISOs as blobs in a crazy media experiment?

Setup dual arrays. A raid 1 for the OS should be fine. A raid 10 or 5 for the data should be good. A raid 10 would be faster but a raid 5 should work for that user load.
