Im building a new rig for some moderate gaming. I really only play Tf2 and CS:S.


NVIDIA 750i SLI MSI P7N Platinum motherboard
Corsair XMS2 2GB (2 X 1GB) PC2-6400 DDR2 RAM 800
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

Either gonna get two 9600gt's or a 8800gts.

Im trying to make the choice between E2180, E2200, or possible the E4600. Ive only spent 220$ on this so far. Im only looking to spend another 120$ for the cpu.

I want to oc whichever one i get to 3.0 on stock voltage. Ill upgrade the fan and thermal gel.

you already have the SLI board?

If i were you i'd get a intel based board, something P35 based, unless you really really need SLI, but if a single GTS is an option..

anyway.. if you want an easy OC then go for the cpu with the highest multi, which would be the e4600, with a 12x multi. Also keep in mind that the extra cache of the e4 series does have its benefits in games, so if you can afford it, it try to find a e4500/e4600

im not sure about 3.0 on stock volts though, ive got a year old e4300, which is currently humming along at 2.4 (just bumped the FSB to 1066), but once i accidently booted it at 3.0 (somehow i couldnt drop my multi one, i wanted to try 333*8, but i got 333*9), which was just stable enough for a single superpi run, and then it crashed. But then again, current chips might clock better then my old one, and it might have been my crappy motherboard (dont want to alarm you, but its a p6n-sli)
 
Ive got a E6400 that does 3.4ghz @ 1.4V. Asking $135 for it if your intrested.
 
i think this should be a decent board.

im leaning towards that 2180 or 4600.


right now im running on a abit motherboard ( dont remember the model ) and a intel p4 2.8, 1gig ddr, 9600xt agp and a 5400rpm ide hard drive. Think ill notice a big difference in game play?
 
There is nothing wrong with bumping the voltage, as long as your temps are sane. If you dig around a bit, there is usually a max voltage that Intel reccomends for a particular chip. I know the max for a Q6600 G0 stepping is 1.5 volts. I run mine at 1.4. Temps are in the mid 60's under load.

In fact, you can figure out the max clock at stock voltage, the add a little extra power to make sure it stays stable over the long run.

You will notice a HUGE difference. I had a similar build to yours but with a msi motherboard, 9700 agp, and a 7200rpm ide hd. Upgraded to a 3200+, same 1 gig mem, new 250 gig hd, 7900gt, and an epox motherboard, made a WORLD of difference. I replaced my 7900gt with a 7900gto(Free of charge:)) and got my 3200+ to 3800+X2. If you think you can, wait for nehalem.
 
so is the general consensus that the 2180 is a good proc?

i think i might sell this board and go with a abit p35-e or the equivalent gigabyte board.
 
Yes, for the money and especially if you are overclocking, you can't really beat it easily. My old E2180 did 3GHz with a 0.01v increase in vcore but after that, it needed a swift kick in the ass to get higher. Overall, I was impressed when I had it. Trades blows with the AMD 6400+.

As for motherboard, I have the IP35-E and it works wonderfully. Only had to increase northbridge volts a smidge to post at 400fsb. Its a solid board and a great platform to overclock with.
 
If you want maximum bang for buck then the E21x0 chips overclocked are hard to beat.

The E4600 is a level above in terms of gaming performance due to the bigger cache, but it would seem to be pushing your budget a bit.
 
You really want to worry more about the cpu than the video card with those games, source engine is very cpu dependent. You can get 300 fps in css with e8400 and a 7600gt.
