Reccomend a CPU upgrade

Right now I have a Socket A motherboard that goes up to 400FSB, but I only have a 1.6GHz Duron. I want to upgrade the chip in 6-8 months, and I was wondering if you guys would suggest which Athlon XP to get.

The numbers are rather confusing, because a 3200+ runs at 2.1Ghz, and a 2700+ runs at 2.18Ghz stock (from what I've seen.)

Please help me select the fastest chip I can put on this board, and reccomend appropriate cooling.

the two main Athlon XP cores are "Barton" and "Thourobred"
the Barton core has 512k L2 cache while the T-bred has 256k L2 cache

btw, the 3200+ barton is 2.2Ghz, not 2.1
as for ur upgrade, i would definately go with a barton core
in 6-8 months, u'll see dramatic price drops on these chips and u'll prolly end up getting a nice 3200+ for cheap

3200+ and 2700+ are what AMD came up with so that they don't look like they're getting annihilated by intel. that is so AMD can go "the 3200+ is equal to the 3.2" and so on and so forth.

i'd say a 2500+ is fine. i think the 3200+ runs at 200fsb *not sure though so don't take my word for it* therotically if it can maintain 400fsb it'll handle a 3200+ but that's just not always the case.

as far as the 6-8 months thing, do you mean you wanna go to an athlon XP in 6-8 months or what? i'm somewhat thinking that the 64-bits will slowly work their way into the more mainstream computing thus making the current Athlon XP's into the bargain bins.

Well, my 1.6 Duron is not exactly doing wonders, but all I have right now is PC2100. I want to get some PC3200 first so that my RAM is fast enough for whatever processor might come my way. The prices on all x86 components are going to drop because the ia64 platform is slowly taking over the market. I want to get the AXP ASAP, but I need RAM fast enough for it first.

I guess my question really is:
I can go up to 400FSB with PC3200, so in terms of what my system will accept I can get any Athlon XP.
Which chip should I get, considering my budget is not very limited and I'm doing a lot of gaming as well as compiling?
