Reasonable Accelero S1 passive temps?

I'm running an 8800GTS (G92) at stock with a passive Accelero S1 (rest of specs in sig.)

25 minutes into ATITool's artifact test, the GPU temperature is either 65C (ATITool, nTune) or 57C (GPU-Z). Two questions:

  1. Is either temp reasonable given my setup, or does it sound like the cooler wasn't mounted correctly?
  2. Which temperature monitoring program is more accurate/reliable?

It depends on ambient temps, case air flow and air flow around the cooler.
With very little induced airflow, 65C is ok.
To improve it, place a silent fan blowing towards the cooler inside the case, you can get big improvements.
If your case airfow is low you might want to look at improving it.

I added an Antec Tricool 120mm running at low to my P182's upper drive bay, and it improved to 64C.

I also tried installing the Turbo Module, but it wouldn't snap into place. Any recommendations for S1 add-on fans?

I moved the Tricool to the S1, and it lowered the temperature 10 degrees.

My only concern is that when I was cutting the zipties, one of them flew somewhere, possibly inside the computer case. I couldn't find anything, but could that short out my system?

Yeah I've seen fishing wire and zipties fans on the cooler.

You could also try a slot cooler? That may help with the ambient, stagnant air, blowing it out the back of the case.

I think the OP's got it right. The Turbo Cool add-on thing is apparently pretty quiet, and pushes a decent amount of air... But personally, I like the idea of strapping a 120mm to it - even something like a low speed Yate @ 7v should be sufficient in most cases, 2 if you really want to make sure the entire board gets cooled. Also, something about the exposed blades on the TC module just doesn't sit right with me (too vulnerable), but that shouldn't be much of an issue w/ good cable management.

Me though, I have an S1 (rev 1; resides on my 7900GT, passive use), but I may not even attempt to switch it out to see if it fits... The stock cooler pumps a decent amount of (warm/hot) air straight out the back, and at 50% locked, I find it still pretty quiet (airplane @ 100% though ).

edit
Really though your passive temps if max load were 65c, you're quite fine. The thermal threshold on the card is 100c (via Riva Tuner diagnostic). You may be happy you have the fan on there though come summer time. And I think both are accurate (short of getting an expensive IR thermo reader or similar). I noticed something in the RT report - an 8c sensor "compensation"..Which may explain the differences in temps...ATIT/Ntune reading straight sensor #'s, and GPU-Z reading the compensated one.

Yeah I've seen fishing wire and zipties fans on the cooler.

But what about a scrap piece of a cable tie? I have no idea where it went, and short of taking my entire system apart, I doubt I'll find it.

Couldn't that short circuit my motherboard if it fell in the wrong place?

it shouldnt do anything if its plastic. A screw fell into my PSU and nothing happened so your fine :p

After a day with the tricool on low, I'm getting 45 idle, and either 50 (30 min of F.E.A.R.) or 55 (30 min of ATITool artifact scan) load. Shouldn't my idle temp be lower?

Did you check your stock temps?

My 7950gt idles at 57c. Thats with good airflow and a case temp of 30c. I would not be complaining about the temps you are getting. But it depends on what kind of airflow your case has.
