Real world difference between M.2 vs SSD for computing/gaming...

I will be purchasing another SSD for my system.. and my motherboard is a X99 Deluxe that has the M.2 slot. I am wondering what the real world difference if I put my OS on a M.2 ssd vs a reg ssd. My current ssd is a Samsung 840Pro

vs your current SSD:

Real world difference for gaming = essentially no difference

Real world difference for computing (what computing?) = ?
If you mean... regular computer usage... then also no difference.

M.2 has a higher bandwidth & potential max speed than SATA 6GBps , but none of what you use the ssd for (that you have named) really favors raw throughput. Latency is considered the biggest factor affecting "speed" and how "fast" an SSD feels, and M.2 is just as good as SATA on that front for all intents and purposes.

Thank you.. You have answered my question. Just to clarify, my regular "computing" is nothing of note or serious..my hardest use of the system is some CAD and then gaming..

Yeah, unless you're managing a database with constant massive file transfers, M.2 really does nothing over SATA.

There is really nothing on the market right now that is a worthy replacement for an 840 Pro.
Samsung has the XP841, but it is expensive, hard to get and not that much faster.
Running on the 840 Pro, too, I would say it will be good for another year at least.
