CPU: AMD 64 3000+ Venice, Socket 939

Motherboard: Abit an8

Video Card: x800xl pci-e (256mb version)

Ram: 512x2 Kingston ValueRam (best ram i have ever used for its price)

Power Supply: Fortron 400w psu with dual 12v rails

Sound Card: SB Live 5.1

Case: xSuperAlien (found on xoxide)

Optics: One DVD-RW +- 8x, One 12x CD Burner (from my old computer)

Hard Drives: Two Western Digital 80gb 7200 RPM, One Western Digital 120gb 7200 RPM

What do you guys think of this build? (especially processor/vid card/motherboard/ram combo)

Don't bother with a SB Live 5.1, get an Audigy 2 ZS. It sounds vastly superior to the Live and handles EAX much better on games like World of Warcraft that support it. Trust me, it's worth it.

You didn't specify, but definately get Serial ATA hard drives if you're buying new ones.

Processor and video card choices are both good. You might want a processor with a higher multiplier if you plan to overclock, otherwise that 3000+ is good.

I don't know much about the Abit AN8. I'm sure it's decent enough.

dont need that sound card
go with a dfi lanparty board (better for overclocking)
CPU id go with a 3200 and lose that card (sound)

Only new parts im buyin is the cpu/mobo/psu/vid card.... All the others are mine...

Do i just use the onboard sound on the ABIT an8? (i already ordered those parts, just wanna see how i did)...

My hard drives are all ATA100... I might exchange my 120gb for a SATA tho..

Hey thanks for your opinions! Keep em comin :)

I don't recommend a DFI Lanparty motherboard unless you seriously enjoy spending hours, if not weeks getting it configured correctly. Mine took way too much effort and the performance isn't any better than other boards, and since you're not buying 3.3v RAM there's no compelling reason to go DFI.

Yea, thats what i heard about DFI lanparty too. I heard it took forever to configure it correctly and it was picky about ram... thats why i went abit.. i'm pretty sure their a reliable company?

They are. You'll probably like that motherboard. You'll probably like everything you bought. :) I would.

Your onboard sound should be ok, but like I said, if you decide to buy a new sound card, spend a little more on the Audigy 2 ZS. It's a much better card and you'll be happier with it. It's really good for 5.1 gaming. The center channel especially is a lot more clear and detailed on the Audigy.

I like my DFI, but yeah it was a royal pain to get working correctly. It still has boot issues with my USB devices sometimes.
