i bought a raptor 36 gig and i heard some stories that they do over heat and burn out. So iam thinking of getting a HDD cooler fan for it. Will it do the job well enough for me not to worry about my HDD burning out 1 night?

AMEN. I just got rid of my 2 Raptors cause they were way too loud! The performance just wasnt worth the noise levels. Right now I'm happy with my 7200rpm Seagate. The Raptors do run warm, but nowhere near hot enough to kill them.cheezies said:I'd be more worried about silencing that thing though.
Darth_Fluffy said:What's the secret behind 36Gig Raptor's added noise? Maybe some component is taken out making it unbalanced and prone to greater vibration?
WHAT THE FUCK WHAT THE FUCK WHAT THE FUCK!?!!!!?!?ToyYoda03 said:Um...i have a 26gb raptor and its hardly loud at all. My new case has rubber washer in the HD tray and it hardly makes a sound that bothers me. My old case didnt and I could hear it but it wasnt that loud, fans are louder
Do you have even any plausible theory behind this mysterious quieting down when the drives are full as opposed to empty? Also, stop following me to every thread and posting intelligent replies like:Dillusion said:raptors ar eonly loud for the first month, when the read head and disks are brand new, once they get written too, they quiet down

drsaari said:i dont know why people say the raptors are loud, i have 2 36gb in raid0 and they are no louder than my 80gb western digital special edition drives. i have them in my super lanboy with the stock 120mm low speed fan blowing over them and they stay nice and cool. this case also has really good vibration isolation for the hard drives.
i recently bought a 250gb maxtor ata133 7200 rpm drive and it is lots louder than my raptors.

Darth_Fluffy said:Well, my 74gig Raptor is at acceptable noise levels. I put some rubber washers in between it and the drive cage, so I think that helps. I have two 80mm fans blowing over it, and it's pretty isolated as well.. No reason for it to overheat, right?
Maybe the first version of 36gig raptors were simply 74gig raptors with half the storage diabled? And the 2nd version, they actually removed the extra platter making it unbalaced, and therefore more prone to vibration? Just a theory, but as good as any, right??

edit- im not following you....
Beleive it, or not that's exactly what they do. A 40Gb hard drive is usually phyiscally identical to it's 120Gb counterpart, only you can't access the rest of the sectors, because the firmware won't allow it. The 120Gb hard drive is actually "bigger" than 120Gb, some likely go over 180Gb. The rest you can't really use. The only time that space becomes used is when you get a bad sector, and it will have to disable that particular sector, and use one in the "inaccessible" part instead.Dillusion said:no offense but thats the dumbest thing ive heard all week. HD's arent video cards, you cant just throw in extra platters and 'disable them' lol

There's a trick to use that unused space, however flawed. If you get a bad sector you're fucked. You can read more on it here:

There are two versions of the raptors because of a bearing change.
Raptor drives have ~18.3 gb platters in them. 2 in the 36gb and 4 and the 74gb.
Yes there is extra space in very hard drive. That is because we don't use the maximum of the platter. This extra space is very small though. As it is meant for when there are bad sectors on the hard drive. And if there are bad sectors on the hard drive you can RMA.
Anyway... Extra space comes from extra platters. There is no way any company would send out Crippled 74gb drives with the 4 platters and then have it only use 2 for a 36gb model. Costs way to much money in the way of extra platters, more heads. It just doesn't happen.
Just incase any one missed what I mentioned in an earlier post. When the raptors are making a loud whining noise that means the bearings are getting to hot. There should be air flow on the drives even a 60mm fan is fine to keep the outside of the drives cool. I have an 80mm fan blowing on my 2 raptors in the hard drive cage. When I touch them they feel about as warm as the case or maybe just a tad warmer. With them at that the only noise I hear is when they are accessing data.
