System specs:
Athlon xp 1800+
Epox 8khal mobo
512mb ram
Geforce 4 ti 4200

Recently this system began having random reboots. Shortly after that started it began hanging at the windows xp start up screen, then rebooting and never actually getting into windows. So far I've tried replacing the ram, and adding better cooling to the processor. I've tried formatting and reinstalling, but it crashes several times during the installation. any ideas?

yeah i got 2 brand new sticks of crucial 256mb and it still does it.. my psu is a 350w Enhance, about 1.5 years old

That sounds similar to what happened to my old P3 board way back when. I had a blown cap on the mobo. Gradually stopped coming on altogether...

it's doing weird things when booting now too.. sometimes when i power it one, it boots and everything seems fine, except there's no display on the monitor.. i have to turn it off and back on and it eventualy boots and displays as normal.. i wish this was easier to diagnose.. after buying that ram im broke for a while and can only afford to try one more solution!

Pretty much sounds like a power supply problem to me. Especially talking about random reboots.

However, if you have WinXP to reboot when a crash occurs, you could be having a driver problem.

Although, from what you have described, definately sounds like a power supply problem.

Try disconnecting any CD, CDRW, DVD, etc. drive you don't need or anything you don't need. Remove extra cards you don't need etc. Try taking as much of a load off the PS as you can and try installing.

It could also be bad hardware.

That sounds for sure like a drive problem.Run a disk diag on the drive.

Hard disks can often need several continous reboots to raise there temp which will make a weak disk boot. Are there any clicking noises at all..
