Random freezes?

Hey all, I helped my friend build a computer recently and he has troubles with it.

He says it randomly freezes for like 10 seconds and then unfreeze and freezes again. He said it mostly happens when his computer is first turned on, so I thought it was because he's loading apps (he doesn't have many apps at all honestly). With his specs he should not be having any problems loading the applications. Here are his specs:

E8400
Biostar P43 (forgot model #)
OCZ 2x1GB Ram
Thermaltake Toughpower 700W PSU
Visontek ATI HD 4850

Keep in mind, other than that his computer is fine, runs games no problems, no BSODs, no random restarts, any advice?

check what services are starting up i delt with this on my gf's computer, it wasnt apps starting up just services that dont ever need to be running, maybe thats the problem. try get a highjack this report and google anything you think is suspicious or not 100% certain on
 
You can't exactly diagnose what's going on without a lot more information. Does the whole computer stop responding at all? Is the processor just maxed out? Is the computer trying to access a network resource that's not available? etc
 
Is VMWare installed? For me when I Install VMware Workstation 6, I can't open any apps for a couple minutes right after booting up - otherwise it will kind of hang - the app will open after a little bit. But then my internet connection comes up in the system tray and everything works.

I guess the problem has something to do with it's virtual ethernet controllers. Uninstall vmware and you're all good!
