random crashes on intel rig

hey all, my friend is getting some random crashes on his comp, normal browsing and windows sessions cause him to crash/shut down...he's running a P4 3.46 EE (gallatin core), 2x512mb Corsair ddr2 533 and a zalman 7000cu hsf
problem is, its giving him some weird problems w/ his proc overheating sometimes andother times its random shut offs
i also had the same problem w/ my amd rig so i decided to clear the CMOS, thing is, idk how to do it on the intel rig :)

if my eyes serve me right...it says "clr cmos" under the intel chip near the battery
if anyone can help w/ this it wud be helpful
 
If the processor is overheating randomly, that is odd. Make sure the heatsink fan unit is clean and mounted properly. What are your temps just sitting at idle in windows?

f you aren't doing CPU intensive tasks, then your CPU should not be getting hot. Run a few spyware (adaware, spybot S&D) and antivirus scans. Plus, even if it is doing CPU intensive tasks, it shouldn't lock up. I think the Zalman comes with a fan controller, you may need to turn the speed of it up a little (or a lot).

Clearing the CMOS really shouldn't affect CPU temp. But that jumper probably is the CMOS clearing jumper. Just move it to the other position for a few seconds with the computer unplugged if you want to clear it.
 
well, his old Ultra psu shorted out (yeah i warned him about that psu too) about a week ago and it was fine for 1 day, then it started crapping on him...im 99% sure it isn't teh hsf as it was getting around 35C idle. will get tot eh CMOS CLR, thanks for teh help so far guys; will post if more problems arise :p
