I've had a strange problem with my computer for a few weeks now and it seems to be getting worse and worse. I'm no stranger to troubleshooting computer problems, but this one has me stumped. My computer will lock up randomly and I can't figure out the problem. There is no BSOD or error message, it just is frozen. I can play a game for hours and have no problems, but if I leave it idle for an hour or two it's likely to freeze. I've watched the CPU temp and according to the ASUS Utility the CPU isn't topping 44c even after playing games for quite a while and stays about 32c while idle. One would think that if the CPU was causing instability it would demonstrate problems while under high stress not while sitting idle. I thought it might be my hard drives, so i ran full surface scans and found nothing. Then I tried running a virus scan, Ad-Aware scan, and defragging at the same time figuring that would put a lot of stress on the hard drives, but it did not lock up. After that I tried swapping out the RAM from 2x 512mb of Corsair XMS PC3700 to 2x 256mb of Corsair XMS PC3500. That didn't seem to make a difference either. I am running out of ideas here since it only seems to happen when it's idle and i can't consistently make it crash. All I can do is sit and wait to see if it does.
My PC specs are:
Antec 400 Watt PSU
ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe Mobo (with latest bios)
P4 3.0c GHz running at about 3.8 GHz with a Thermalright SP-94 Heatpipe Heatsink and a 56CFM 92mm fan
2x 512mb Corsair XMS PC3700
Radeon 9800 Pro
SoundBlaster Audigy Platinum EX
2x Western Digital 80GB 8mb Cache HDD in RAID 0 on the integrated Promise controller (C drive)
2x IBM 60GB HDD in RAID 1 on the integrated Promise controller (D drive)
Toshiba DVD-ROM
Plextor 40x12x40 CD-RW
Pioneer DVR-A07 DVD-RW
Lian-Li PC68 Case with two side 80mm blowholes
Windows XP Pro SP1
The machine is operating at 252MHz FSB and a 5:4 ratio. Normally I would blame the overclock, but it was perfectly stable for several months and, again, it seems to only freezes when it's idle. Please let me know if you have any ideas. Thank you.
