Just a few questions about ramsinks and whatnot...

I was looking on eBay and I was considering buying Ramsinks for chips that control the FSB on my motherboard (the ones by the coil things... name is escaping me atm), as well as a heatsink for my southbridge (I have a Abit NF-7).

I was wondering if these would help overclocking at all, or if it's generall be a waste.


And, if I do get them, should I use my arctic silver Creamique, or the thermal pad it comes with?
 
Yes! Its a very good idea, as the MOSFETS(is that what you meant?) can often reach over 90C in an overclocked, full load situation. Ramsinks can improve stability of the mobo, and often increase your OC at least 20-50mhz, not much, but every litle bit helps, my max OC untweaked, was 3.08, with a little tweaking, adjusting, and some ramsinks, and some other random things, i was able to reach 3.22. stable.

Also, to attach the ramsinks, try this, put a dab of AS5 in the middle, and put 4 tiny little dots of superglue around the edges, and apply pressure. it works much better than thermal tape, and they can be removed without any damage, i have accidentally dismounted mine, just because i bumped one with my hand or something. they will stay on, as long as they are not acted upon by any forces, other than gravity..

i tried super glue once ended as a bigger pain than it was worth if your gonna do it do it right
 
yea scrap the super glue idea... to remove my ram sinks that I had on my 9800pro i had to use alot of acitone (sp?) luckly i didn't fubar my card at all.. but yea the whole superglue plan.. is a badone.. if you want easy removal.. just use the thermal tape.. if your not planning on removing the ram sinks then just use some thermal epoxy;.
 
I have heard a lot of people claim that ramsinks don't really help any. After reading this, just for the hell of it I felt the ram chips on my 9800 Pro. They are barely warm and I was playing COD before this. (I also noticed the back side of the PCB directly over the GPU is cold, damn I love my maze4) :)
 
Those ramsinks look pretty good, and it appears the have a good surface area, those tweakmonster ones, although they may look tight as hell, they dont do anything hardly, for cooling, since they have so little surface area....



well, in reference to anyone who disagrees with the superglue method, you probably used too much. if you use tiny dots in each corner, they will pop off on command, but stay on when you need them to. if you dont make a big mess of superglue and thermal goo, it works very well, and the small dots of superglue can be easily scratched off with no damage to the card whatsoever. just my opinion. works great for me.

the ram on my friends 9800XT, is 2.5ns samsung, and his, even with the heatspreader, gets flaming hot, his case has fairly good airflow, 2 80mm in, 2 80mm out. and his GPU reaches 60/80C idle/load respectively.

Depends, copper is more effective than aluminium but there is not much difference made by the actual design (in my experience).
 
Those are sweet, but I would recommend thermal epoxy rather than the tape they supply - its transfers heat far better
